It was Lily's tenth birthday, and it was raining hard. Ten children were in the living room, and they could not play outside. They were getting bored.
Then Grandpa stood up. He was wearing a funny party hat. "Who likes riddles?" he asked. "I have five of them. The child with the most correct answers will get the first piece of cake. But I won't tell you the answers until after the cake!"
The children sat down on the floor. Grandpa started. "A red house is made of red bricks. A blue house is made of blue bricks. What is a greenhouse made of?"
"Green bricks!" shouted Tom at once. Grandpa just smiled. "Next one," he said. "What gets bigger and bigger when you take more and more away from it?"
Lily's little brother Sam looked at the birthday cake. "The cake? No, wait. The cake gets smaller." Everyone laughed.
"Riddle three," said Grandpa. "You cannot see me, but you can hear me. I cannot talk, but I answer when you speak. What am I?" Mia thought hard. She looked at the big empty box from Lily's new bike.
"Riddle four. Which is faster, heat or cold?" "Heat!" said Ken. "Why?" asked Grandpa. Ken did not know why. He just liked the word.
"Last one. What has a neck but no head, and two arms but no hands?" The children looked at each other. Then they looked at Grandpa. Grandpa was wearing something with a neck and two arms, too.
The children wrote their answers on paper. In the end, Lily had the most correct answers, so she got the first piece of cake. But she gave it to Grandpa. "You're the best riddle teacher," she said.
Do you know the answers? Here they are. 1. Glass. A greenhouse is a glass house for plants. 2. A hole. When you dig more, the hole gets bigger. 3. An echo. 4. Heat, because you can catch a cold! 5. A shirt.
Riddle 4 is a word game. You cannot catch heat, but you can catch a cold. So cold must be slower! Of course, "catch a cold" really means to get sick.
