Long ago, a poor old man and his wife lived in a small house in the snowy mountains. They worked hard, but they never had much money.
One cold winter day, the old man was walking home from town. He heard a sad cry in the field. It was a crane, a big white bird with long legs. Its leg was caught in a hunter's trap.
"Oh, you poor thing," said the old man. He carefully opened the trap. The crane looked at him for a moment. Then it opened its wide wings and flew up into the gray sky. "Kooo, kooo!" it called, as if it was saying thank you.
That night, it was snowing hard. Someone knocked on the door. When the old woman opened it, a young girl was standing in the snow. "I am lost," she said. "May I stay here tonight?"
"Of course! Come in and get warm," said the old couple. The girl stayed that night, and the next night, and the next. She cooked and cleaned and always smiled. The old couple had no children, so they loved her like a daughter.
One day, the girl said, "Please let me weave some cloth for you. But you must promise one thing. While I am working, please never look into the room." The old couple promised.
The girl went into the small back room and closed the door. Soon they heard the sound of the loom. Ton, ton, kara, kara. Ton, ton, kara, kara. The sound went on all day and all night, for three days.
On the fourth morning, the girl came out. She looked thin and very tired. But in her hands, there was a cloth. It was the most beautiful cloth in the world. It was white and soft, and it shone like snow in the sun.
The old man took the cloth to town and sold it for a lot of money. Now they could buy rice and warm clothes. But soon the girl went into the room again. Ton, ton, kara, kara.
This time, the old woman was worried. "She is getting thinner and thinner. Is she all right?" She could not stop herself. She opened the door just a little and looked in.
There was no girl in the room. A white crane was sitting at the loom. It was pulling out its own feathers with its beak and weaving them into the cloth. The old woman cried out in surprise.
The sound of the loom stopped. The girl came out with the last piece of cloth. "I am the crane that you saved," she said quietly. "I wanted to thank you. But now you have seen me, so I cannot stay here anymore."
She turned into a crane again and flew out into the snowy sky. The old man and the old woman ran outside. "Come back!" they shouted. The crane flew around the house once. Then it flew away over the mountains and never came back.
