Long ago, an old man and an old woman lived at the foot of a mountain. Every night, a tanuki came and ate the beans in their field. A tanuki is a raccoon dog, and it is good at tricks.
One day, the old man caught the tanuki and tied it up in the kitchen. "Tonight we will have tanuki soup," he said, and he went back to the field.
The tanuki started to cry. "Please, grandma, untie me. I will help you make rice cakes. I promise I will be good." The old woman was kind, so she untied the rope.
But the tanuki was not good at all. It pushed the old woman down, and she hurt her back badly. Then it took all the rice cakes and ran off into the mountain, laughing.
When the old man came home, he found his wife lying on the floor. He was so sad that he cried. A white rabbit who lived nearby heard the story. "Don't worry," said the rabbit. "I will teach that tanuki a lesson."
The next day, the rabbit went to the tanuki. "Let's go and cut some firewood together." The tanuki carried a big pile of wood on its back. The rabbit walked behind it and hit two flint stones together. Kachi, kachi!
"What is that kachi-kachi sound?" asked the tanuki. "Oh, this is Kachi-kachi Mountain," said the rabbit. "The kachi-kachi birds are singing." Soon the wood on the tanuki's back began to smoke. "Hot! Hot! Hot!" The tanuki dropped the wood and jumped into the river.
The next day, the rabbit brought some medicine for its back. But the medicine was really hot red pepper. "Ouch! It burns!" cried the tanuki, and it danced around and around.
A few days later, the rabbit said, "Let's go fishing on the lake. I made two boats." One was a small wooden boat. The other was a big boat made of mud. "I want the big one," said the greedy tanuki.
In the middle of the lake, the mud boat started to melt. Water came in. "Help! I can't swim!" shouted the tanuki.
The rabbit rowed over. "Will you say sorry to the old woman? Will you never trick anyone again?" "Yes! Yes! I promise!" cried the tanuki. So the rabbit pulled it into the wooden boat.
The wet tanuki went to the old couple's house. It bowed very low and said sorry. After that, it worked in their field every day, and it never ate their beans again. The old woman's back got better, and the rabbit came to visit them often.
