Botchan was a young teacher from Tokyo. He taught math at a middle school in a small town in Shikoku. He was very honest, but he got angry very quickly. He did not like the town much, but he loved its hot spring.
One night, it was Botchan's turn to stay at the school all night. The teachers took turns to watch the school and the dormitory. Students from faraway villages lived in the dormitory. Botchan thought this job was boring. He had to stay at school, but after dinner he went out to the hot spring. On the way, he met the principal. The principal looked at him strangely. Botchan did not care.
When he came back, he laid out his futon. A futon is a soft Japanese bed that people put on the tatami floor at night. He jumped onto it happily. Then something strange happened. Something was moving under his legs. Something was jumping on his arms. He threw off the cover.
There were grasshoppers in his bed! Fifty or sixty of them! Botchan was surprised, and then he was very angry. He hit them with his pillow again and again. It took him half an hour to get them all out of the room.
Botchan called six students from the dormitory. "Why did you put grasshoppers in my bed?" he shouted.
One student answered slowly. "Those are not batta, sir. They are inago." In Japanese, there are two words for this kind of insect, and the students thought it was very funny.
"Batta or inago, it's the same thing!" said Botchan. "Why did you put them in my bed?"
"We didn't put anything in your bed, sir," said another student. "Maybe the inago liked your bed and went in by themselves." The students all spoke in the local way, and they smiled the whole time.
Botchan was so angry that he could not speak for a moment. "If you do something, you should say that you did it," he said. "Telling lies is the worst thing a person can do!" But the students only bowed politely and went back to their rooms.
Botchan got back into bed. Just when he was falling asleep, there was a huge noise above his head. Boom! Boom! Boom! Thirty or forty students were stamping on the floor upstairs. Then they all shouted together, "Wahhh!"
Botchan jumped up and ran up the stairs. But when he got there, everything was quiet. All the rooms were dark, and everyone seemed to be asleep. When he went back down, the noise started again. He ran up again in the dark and hit his leg hard. It hurt very much.
"I will not lose to these boys," Botchan said to himself. He sat down in the dark hallway and waited all night. In the morning, he woke up there with the sun in his eyes and mosquito bites all over his face.
Later that morning, the principal came and listened to the story. "I will talk to the students about it," he said calmly. But Botchan was not happy. "Those boys must say they are sorry," he thought. "I won't give up, even if it takes a hundred years!"
