Long ago, a white rabbit lived on a small island called Oki. Every day, he looked across the sea at the land of Inaba. "I want to go over there," he thought. "But I can't swim that far."
One day, he had an idea. He went to the beach and called out to the wani in the sea. Wani are sharks. "Hello, Mr. Shark! I wonder whose family is bigger, yours or mine. Let's count!"
"How?" asked the shark. "Call all of your family," said the rabbit. "Tell them to make a line from this island to Inaba. Then I will jump on your backs and count you."
The sharks thought it was a fun game. Soon, a long line of sharks stretched across the sea. The rabbit began to hop from back to back. "One, two, three, four..." He was almost there.
When he got to the last shark, he could not stop himself. He laughed and said, "Ha ha! You are so silly! I didn't want to count you. I just wanted a bridge!"
The last shark was very angry. It grabbed the rabbit and pulled off all of his soft white fur. The poor rabbit fell on the beach of Inaba. His skin was red, and it hurt very much. He lay on the sand and cried.
Just then, a group of young gods came walking along the beach. There were eighty brothers, and they were all going to visit a beautiful princess named Yakami-hime. Each brother wanted to marry her.
"What happened to you?" one of them asked. Then he smiled a mean smile. "Wash your body in the salty sea and lie in the wind. Then you will get better." The rabbit did that. But the salt water made his skin hurt even more. When the wind dried it, his skin cracked. He cried louder than before.
Last of all came the youngest brother, Okuninushi. He was walking slowly because he was carrying all of his brothers' heavy bags. When he saw the rabbit, he stopped. "Oh, you poor thing. What happened?"
The rabbit told him the whole story. Okuninushi listened kindly. "Go to the river and wash your body in the fresh water," he said. "Then take the soft yellow pollen from the gama plants by the river, put it on the ground, and roll in it."
The rabbit did just that. Little by little, the pain went away. Soon, new white fur grew all over his body.
"Thank you," said the rabbit. "Your brothers will not marry the princess. You will, because you have a kind heart." And it happened just as the rabbit said. Today, people say the white rabbit became a god, too, and they still visit his shrine near that beach.
