In a village by a wide river, people told stories about a kappa. A kappa is a water creature. It is about the size of a child. It has green skin, a shell on its back like a turtle, and a short beak.
On top of its head, a kappa has a flat dish called a sara. The sara is always full of water. When the dish is full, the kappa is very strong. But if the water spills out, the kappa becomes weak and cannot move.
Kappa love two things. They love cucumbers, and they love sumo wrestling. But the kappa in this river also loved tricks. It often pulled people's horses into the river and laughed when they got wet.
One summer evening, a boy named Goro took his horse to the river to wash it. While Goro was getting water, the kappa came out quietly. It grabbed the horse's tail. "Come into the river!" it laughed.
But the horse was surprised, and it ran. It ran up the bank and all the way back to Goro's house, with the kappa still holding on to its tail.
Goro ran after them. In the yard, the kappa was getting up from the ground. It was angry. "I will pull you into the river, too!" it said.
Goro was scared. But he remembered something his grandmother told him. "A kappa is very polite. If you bow to it, it will always bow back."
So Goro bowed very deeply. "Good evening, Mr. Kappa." The kappa could not stop itself. It bowed very deeply, too. "Good evening." Splash! The water spilled out of the dish on its head.
"Oh no," said the kappa in a weak voice. It sat down on the ground. "Please, give me some water. I can't move."
"First, you must promise," said Goro. "You will never pull horses or people into the river again." "I promise, I promise," said the kappa. So Goro filled the kappa's dish with water from his bucket.
The kappa stood up. It looked at Goro for a long time. Then it bowed again, more carefully this time, and went back to the river.
The next morning, Goro found a big fresh fish at his door. The morning after that, there was another one. Every morning, there was a fish. The kappa kept its promise.
So Goro began to leave something by the river every evening. Can you guess what it was? Yes, it was a nice green cucumber. And sometimes, on warm nights, the boy and the kappa had sumo matches by the water.
