One spring afternoon, a white dog named Shiro was walking down a quiet street. In Japanese, "shiro" means "white." He was smelling the ground and enjoying the warm sun.
When he turned a corner, he suddenly stopped. A man was hiding behind a tree. He had a long rope in his hand. He was a dog catcher, and he was watching a black dog. The black dog was Kuro, Shiro's friend from the house next door. Kuro was eating some bread, and he did not see the man.
Shiro wanted to shout, "Kuro, run!" But at that moment, the dog catcher looked at Shiro. His eyes said, "Be quiet, or you will be next." Shiro was so afraid that he forgot everything. He ran away as fast as he could. Behind him, he heard Kuro crying out.
Shiro ran all the way home. In the garden, he found the two children of the house, a girl and her little brother. "Help! Help!" he barked. "The dog catcher has caught Kuro!"
But the children only looked at him in surprise. "Whose dog is this?" asked the boy. "I don't know," said the girl. "It's a strange black dog. Go away, dirty dog!" The boy picked up his baseball bat.
Shiro could not understand. Then he looked down at his own legs. They were black! His back and his tail were black, too. He was as black as an old cooking pot. When the bat came down, Shiro ran out of the garden, crying.
After that, Shiro lived alone. He was very lonely and sad. "Maybe I became black because I ran away from Kuro," he thought. "I was a coward. I didn't help my friend." He hated himself, and he decided never to be a coward again.
Soon people began to talk about a brave black dog. The black dog pulled a little child out of the way of a train. He saved a puppy from some cruel boys. He found some lost students in the snowy mountains. A wolf escaped from a zoo, and he even fought it. The newspapers wrote about him again and again, but nobody knew where he came from.
Shiro was not trying to be a hero. He was so ashamed that he did not care what happened to him. He ran into fire and danger without fear. But every time, he came back alive.
One autumn night, Shiro came back to his old home. The moon was big and bright. "I want to see the children one more time," he thought. He lay down next to his old dog house and fell asleep.
In the morning, the children came out into the garden. The girl cried out, "Look! Shiro has come back!" Her brother ran to him and hugged him around the neck.
Shiro looked up into the girl's dark eyes. In her eyes, he could see a little dog. It was a white dog, as white as snow. Shiro was white again! Tears came to his eyes, and he could not stop them. The children did not know why their dog was crying, but they held him close.
