Long ago, an old man and an old woman wanted a child very much. Every day they prayed, "Please give us a child, even a tiny one, as small as a finger."
One day, their wish came true. A baby boy was born. He was really as small as a finger! He was only one sun tall. One sun is about three centimeters. So they named him Issun-boshi, the One-Sun Boy.
Years went by, but Issun-boshi never grew any bigger. Still, he was brave and clever. One day he said, "I want to go to Kyoto, the capital, and become a great samurai."
His mother gave him a sewing needle for a sword. He used a piece of straw to hold the sword at his side. For a boat, he used a rice bowl. For an oar, he used a chopstick. "Goodbye! I will come back as a samurai!" he said, and he went down the river.
After many days, he arrived in Kyoto. The streets were full of people. "Watch out, or they will step on me," he thought. He found a big house that belonged to a rich lord. "Please let me work here," he said in his loudest voice.
The lord was surprised, but he let the tiny boy stay. Issun-boshi worked hard. He sat on the lord's desk and helped him with his papers. The lord's daughter, the princess, liked him very much because he was funny and kind.
One day, the princess went to a temple, and Issun-boshi went with her. On the way home, a huge red oni jumped out from behind a tree. "I will take the princess!" it roared.
"Stop!" shouted Issun-boshi. He pulled out his needle sword. The oni laughed. "What a little bug!" It picked him up and swallowed him in one gulp.
Inside the oni's stomach, it was dark. But Issun-boshi was not afraid. He poked the stomach with his needle. Poke, poke, poke! "Ouch! Ouch! Stop it!" cried the oni. It coughed, and Issun-boshi flew out of its mouth. The oni was so scared that it ran away into the mountains.
The oni left something on the ground. It was a small wooden hammer. "That is an uchide no kozuchi, a magic hammer," said the princess. "If you shake it, your wish will come true."
She shook the hammer. "Grow big! Grow big!" Issun-boshi became bigger and bigger. Soon he was a tall and handsome young man.
Issun-boshi became a fine samurai, and he married the princess. Then he brought his old mother and father to Kyoto, and they all lived happily together.
