Bisei stood under a bridge. He waited there for a woman, and some time went by.
He looked up. Ivy grew halfway up the high stone rail of the bridge. Now and then people crossed the bridge, and the bottoms of their white clothes moved slowly in the wind. The setting sun shone brightly on them. But the woman still did not come.
Bisei whistled softly and looked around under the bridge. There was a small area of yellow mud, and then the water began. Among the reeds at the water's edge, there were many round holes. Maybe crabs lived in them. Each time a wave hit them, there was a soft sound. But the woman still did not come.
Bisei was getting a little impatient. He walked to the edge of the water and looked up and down the quiet river. Not a single boat passed. Green reeds grew thickly along the river, and here and there were round willow trees. Only a narrow band of clear water wound quietly through the reeds. The reflection of one cloud shone on it. But the woman still did not come.
Bisei walked back and forth on the mud. It was slowly getting dark. He listened to the quiet around him. No one was crossing the bridge now. He could not hear any shoes, horses, or carts. He could hear only the wind, the reeds, and the water. Then, somewhere, a heron cried loudly. Bisei stopped. The tide was coming in. The water was shining closer than before. But the woman still did not come.
Bisei frowned and began to walk faster and faster in the dark under the bridge. Little by little, the river water came up over the mud. The cold smell of water and river plants touched his skin. He looked up. The light of the setting sun was gone. Only the stone rail of the bridge stood black against the pale evening sky. But the woman still did not come.
At last, Bisei stood still. The water was already wetting his shoes. It spread under the bridge and shone colder than steel. Soon it would cover his knees, his stomach, and his chest. The water rose higher and higher. Now both of his legs were under the water. But the woman still did not come.
Bisei stood in the water. He still had a little hope, and he looked up at the bridge again and again.
The water was up to his stomach now. The evening darkness covered everything. From the mist came only the lonely sound of reeds and willows. A fish jumped past his nose and showed its white belly. Stars were already shining in the sky. Even the bridge was disappearing into the dark. But the woman still did not come...
In the middle of the night, moonlight filled the reeds and the willows. The river water and the soft wind whispered to each other. Gently, they carried Bisei's dead body from under the bridge toward the sea. But perhaps Bisei's soul had fallen in love with the lonely moonlight. Quietly it left his body and rose high into the softly shining sky, just as the smell of water rises silently from a river.
Thousands of years later, after many lives, this soul had to be born again as a human. It is the soul that lives in me now. So, though I was born in modern times, I cannot do any important work. Day and night I live in a dreamy way. I am only waiting for something strange and wonderful to come. I am just like Bisei, who waited and waited under the bridge in the evening for the woman who would never come.
