A little man in a small round hat walks down a road. His trousers are too big, his jacket is too small, and his shoes are much too long. He swings a thin cane and walks with his feet turned out. This is the Tramp, the most famous character of Charlie Chaplin.
Charles Chaplin was born in London in 1889. His parents were singers and actors in music halls. But his father drank too much and left the family. His mother tried hard, but she lost her voice and later had serious mental health problems. Charlie and his older brother, Sydney, were so poor that they had to live in a workhouse, a place for people with no money. Sometimes they had nothing to eat.
According to Chaplin himself, he first went on stage at the age of five. His mother was singing when her voice broke, and the crowd began to shout. The young boy was taken onto the stage, and he sang in her place. People laughed and threw coins.
As a teenager, Charlie worked as an actor and joined a comedy group. In 1910, the group went to America. Charlie was noticed there, and in 1914 he started to make films in Hollywood. In one of his early films, he put together the big trousers, the small hat and the cane. The Tramp was born.
Films at that time had no sound. Actors had to tell stories with their bodies and faces. Chaplin was a master of this. He made people laugh by falling, slipping and running away from the police. But his films were also sad. The Tramp was poor and lonely, but he was always kind. In The Kid, he takes care of a baby who was left on the street.
Chaplin did almost everything himself. He wrote the stories, directed the films, acted in them and even wrote the music. He was a perfectionist. Sometimes he filmed one short scene hundreds of times.
In 1940, he made The Great Dictator. In this film, he laughed at Adolf Hitler, who was then one of the most powerful men in the world. At the end, Chaplin spoke directly to the audience and asked for peace and kindness between people.
Later, some politicians in America did not like his ideas. In 1952, he traveled to Europe. Then the American government said that he might not be able to come back. So he made his home in Switzerland. But in 1972, he returned to Hollywood to receive a special Academy Award. The audience stood and clapped for a long time.
Chaplin died on Christmas Day in 1977. Even today, people all over the world laugh at his films without needing any words. He showed that laughter and tears are close friends, and that a poor little man can have a very big heart.
