One morning, a hunter came into the forest. He was wearing brand new hunting clothes, and there was a big feather in his hat. He was carrying a long, shiny spear. He walked loudly and proudly through the trees.
Soon he came to a woodcutter who was cutting down an old oak tree. The woodcutter stopped working and wiped his face. "Good morning, sir," he said.
"Good morning," said the hunter. "I am a great hunter. I am looking for a lion. People say there is a big lion in this forest, and I am going to find him. Have you seen his footprints? Do you know where he lives?"
The woodcutter smiled. "Footprints?" he said. "I can do better than that. I know this lion very well. Come with me, and I will show you the lion himself. He is sleeping very near here."
The hunter's face went white. His spear began to shake in his hand. "The, the lion himself?" he said.
"Yes," said the woodcutter happily. "He is just behind those trees. Only a few steps away. Follow me!" He put down his axe and started walking.
"No! No, no, thank you!" said the hunter quickly. His teeth were making little clicking sounds. He took a step back, and then another. "I think you did not understand me. I did not ask for the lion. I asked only for his footprints. Just his footprints! That is all I am looking for today."
"But you said you were a great hunter," said the woodcutter.
"Yes, well," said the hunter, "a great hunter must study footprints first. That is very important work. Very important. The lion can wait for another day." He was still moving backward. Then he turned around, and he started to walk away very fast.
Just then, a deep, sleepy roar came from behind the trees. The hunter screamed. He dropped his shiny spear, and he ran out of the forest as fast as his legs could carry him. His fancy hat fell off, but he did not stop to pick it up.
The woodcutter laughed and went back to his tree. Later that day, he found the hat on the path. He put it on his own head. "This will keep the sun off my face," he said. "Thank you, great hunter."
