One summer night, the animals of the forest had a big party. There were lights in the trees, sweet fruit on the tables, and music everywhere. Everyone was wearing their best fur and feathers.
In the middle of the party, the monkey jumped up onto a big flat rock. "I will dance for you!" he said. The music started, and the monkey began to dance. He jumped and turned. He did flips in the air. He spun on one hand. He was light, fast, and wonderful to watch.
When he finished, everyone clapped and shouted. "Bravo! Bravo, monkey!" The lion gave him a big bowl of bananas. The birds sang his name. All night, the animals were talking about the monkey's dance.
The camel was standing at the back of the party. He was watching all of this, and he was not happy. He was very jealous.
"Why does everyone love the monkey so much?" he thought. "He is small and noisy. I am much bigger than he is. I am sure I can dance even better. Then everyone will clap for me, and the lion will give me a prize."
So the camel walked to the middle of the party. "Excuse me! Excuse me, everyone!" he said loudly. "Now I am going to dance for you!" The animals were surprised, but they made a circle around him. The music started.
The camel lifted one long leg. Then he lifted another. He tried to jump, but he was too heavy. He tried to turn, but his long legs got mixed up. His big hump moved from side to side. He spun around, and he knocked over a table of fruit. Grapes and melons flew everywhere. He stepped on the tail of a fox. He kicked the bear by accident. Then he fell down on top of the drums with a terrible crash.
The music stopped. Nobody clapped. Everyone was looking at the camel, and they were very angry.
"You broke the drums!" said the rabbit.
"You stepped on my tail!" said the fox.
"You ruined our party!" roared the lion. "Get out!"
The animals chased the camel out of the party with sticks. He ran into the dark forest, and he did not stop until he came to the desert.
The next morning, the camel sat alone on the sand. "I am not a dancer," he said sadly. "But I can walk for days without water. I can carry heavy loads across the desert. Nobody else can do that." He stood up and walked slowly across the sand, and for the first time, he felt proud of being a camel.
