It was a sunny day in the countryside. A farmer named Tim was walking home along a small river. He was carrying a cup made from a cow's horn, because he always liked to drink fresh water from the river.
田舎の、よく晴れた日のことでした。ティムという農夫が、小さな川ぞいの道を歩いて家に帰るところでした。手には、牛の角で作ったコップを持っていました。川のきれいな水を飲むのが、いつも楽しみだったのです。
Suddenly, he heard a terrible noise near the water. There were loud cries and the sound of wings. He ran over and saw a big eagle and a long green snake. They were fighting in the grass. The snake was winning. It was wrapping its long body around the eagle, tighter and tighter. The eagle could not breathe, and its wings were moving more and more slowly.
突然、水辺のほうから恐ろしい物音が聞こえました。大きな鳴き声と、羽ばたく音がします。走っていってみると、大きなワシと長い緑色のヘビが、草むらの中で戦っていました。ヘビのほうが勝っていました。長い体をワシに巻きつけ、どんどんきつく締めつけています。ワシは息ができず、翼の動きはだんだん弱くなっていきました。
"That poor bird!" said Tim. He did not stop to think. He took hold of the snake with both hands and pulled it off the eagle. The snake was very strong, but Tim was stronger. At last, the eagle was free. It flew up into the sky with a loud cry.
「かわいそうな鳥だ！」と、ティムは言いました。考えるより先に、体が動きました。両手でヘビをつかみ、ワシから引きはがしたのです。ヘビはとても力が強かったのですが、ティムのほうがもっと強かったのです。とうとうワシは自由になりました。そして大きく鳴いて、空へ舞い上がりました。
The snake was very angry. "That bird was my dinner," it thought. "This man took it away from me. I am going to make him pay."
ヘビは、かんかんに怒りました。「あの鳥は、おれの晩ごはんだったんだ」と、ヘビは思いました。「この人間が、それを取り上げた。思い知らせてやる」
Tim did not know what the snake was thinking. He was hot and tired after the fight. He went down to the river and filled his horn cup with water. Then he put it down on a rock, and he sat in the grass to rest for a moment.
ティムは、ヘビが何を考えているのか知りませんでした。ヘビと争ったあとで、暑くて疲れていました。川へ下りていって、角のコップに水をくみました。それからコップを岩の上に置き、少し休もうと草の上に座りました。
While he was resting, the snake moved quietly through the grass. It came to the rock, and it put its head over the cup. Then it let some of its deadly poison drop into the water. After that, it slid away into the grass and waited.
ティムが休んでいる間に、ヘビは草の中をこっそりと進んでいきました。岩のところまで来ると、コップの上に頭を伸ばしました。そして、命取りになる毒を、水の中に何滴か垂らしました。それからするすると草の中へ戻り、待ち構えていました。
Tim did not see anything. After a few minutes, he stood up. "Now for a nice cool drink," he said. He picked up his cup and lifted it to his mouth.
ティムは、何も見ていませんでした。数分たって、ティムは立ち上がりました。「さあ、冷たい水を一杯飲むとするか」と言って、コップを手に取り、口もとへ持ち上げました。
At that moment, there was a loud cry in the sky. The eagle came down like a stone. It hit Tim's hand with its strong wing, and the cup flew out of his hand. The water went everywhere. Then the eagle caught the cup with its claws and carried it high into the air.
そのとき、空で大きな鳴き声がしました。ワシが、石のように一直線に舞い降りてきたのです。ワシは強い翼でティムの手を打ち、コップは手から飛んでいきました。水はあたり一面に飛び散りました。それからワシは、爪でコップをつかみ、空高く運び去りました。
Tim was very surprised and a little angry. "Hey! What are you doing?" he shouted. Then he saw the snake in the grass. It was looking at him with angry eyes, and it was moving away fast. Suddenly, Tim understood.
ティムはとても驚き、少し腹を立てました。「おい！ 何をするんだ？」と、叫びました。そのとき、草の中にヘビがいるのが見えました。ヘビは怒った目でティムを見ながら、すばやく逃げていくところでした。その瞬間、ティムにはすべてがわかりました。
He looked up at the eagle, flying in circles in the blue sky above him. "Thank you, my friend," he said. "Today I saved you, and now you have saved me."
ティムは、頭の上の青い空でぐるぐると輪を描いて飛んでいるワシを見上げました。「ありがとう、友よ」と、ティムは言いました。「今日はぼくがきみを助けて、今度はきみがぼくを助けてくれたんだね」
