Two young men named Ben and Max were traveling together to the city. It was a long way, so they walked and talked all morning. The sun was hot, and the road was dusty.
Suddenly, Ben stopped. Something was shining at the side of the road. He bent down and picked it up. It was a beautiful new axe with a strong wooden handle.
"Look at this!" Ben shouted. "I found an axe! I am so lucky! I can sell this in the city for a lot of money."
Max smiled. "That is great," he said. "But you should not say 'I found an axe.' We are traveling together. We are friends. You should say 'We found an axe.'"
Ben held the axe close to his body. "No, no," he said. "My eyes saw it first. My hands picked it up. So it is my axe. I found it, not you."
Max did not say anything. He only shrugged, and they started walking again. Ben was very happy. He was carrying the axe on his shoulder and singing. He was already thinking about the money.
They walked only a short way. Then they heard a voice behind them. "Stop! Stop, you thieves!" They turned around. A big, angry farmer was running down the road toward them. "That is my axe!" he shouted. "I left it there for one minute, and you stole it!"
Ben's face turned white. He looked at Max with frightened eyes. "Oh no," he said. "We are in big trouble now! What are we going to do?"
Max folded his arms. "We?" he said calmly. "Why do you say 'we'? A few minutes ago, you said 'I found an axe.' So now you should say 'I am in big trouble.' Not 'we.'"
"But, but, you are my friend!" cried Ben.
"I was your friend when you found the axe too," said Max. "You did not want to share the good luck with me. So why should I share the bad luck with you?"
The farmer was getting closer. Ben did not know what to do. At last, he put the axe down in the middle of the road. "Sorry, sir!" he called. "I did not steal it! I found it! Here it is!"
The farmer picked up his axe, said some angry words, and walked away. Ben looked at Max with a red face. "I am sorry," he said. "Next time, I will say 'we.'"
