A young goat named Billy loved to eat sweet grass in the mountain fields. Every evening, the other goats walked home together with the shepherd. But one evening, Billy found a very delicious patch of grass. "Just a few more bites," he thought. When he looked up, the other goats were gone. The sun was going down, and he was all alone.
He started walking home as fast as he could. But halfway down the mountain, a big gray wolf jumped out from behind a rock. "Good evening, little goat," said the wolf with a smile. "What a nice dinner you will be!"
Billy turned and ran, but the wolf was much faster. Soon Billy's back was against a big rock, and the wolf was standing in front of him. There was nowhere to run.
Billy was very scared, but he was also clever. He took a deep breath. "Mr. Wolf," he said, "I know that I can't escape. I know that you are going to eat me. But before I die, will you do one small thing for me?"
The wolf was feeling happy and kind, because his dinner could not run away. "What is it?" he asked.
"I love to dance," said Billy. "Please play me a song on your flute, so that I can dance one last time. Then I will be ready."
The wolf had a little flute, and he was very proud of his music. Nobody ever asked him to play. "Well," he said, "why not? One song." He took out his flute and began to play.
He played a happy, fast song. Billy danced and jumped around. "That is wonderful!" Billy said. "Please play louder! Louder!" The wolf closed his eyes and played louder and louder. His music went all the way down the mountain.
Down in the village, three big farm dogs heard the music. "What is that strange noise?" said one dog. "It is coming from the mountain," said another. "Let's go and look!" They ran up the hill, barking loudly.
The wolf heard the dogs too late. When he opened his eyes, they were almost on top of him. He dropped his flute and ran away into the forest. The dogs chased him far, far away.
As he ran, the wolf said to himself, "It serves me right. My job is to catch goats, not to play music for them. Why did I try to be a musician?"
And Billy walked safely home behind the dogs, still dancing a little.
