On a big farm, there lived a horse and a donkey. The horse belonged to the farmer's rich son. He lived in a beautiful stable, and every day he got a big box of golden barley. The donkey belonged to an old servant. He lived in a small shed, and he usually got only a little dry grass.
One day at noon, the donkey was very hungry. He walked past the horse's stable and saw the horse eating. The box was so full that some barley was falling on the floor.
"Good afternoon, friend," said the donkey politely. "Your lunch smells wonderful. I am very hungry today. Could you please share a little of your barley with me? Only a few mouthfuls. You have so much."
The horse lifted his head and looked at the donkey. He thought for a moment. Then he spoke in a grand voice.
"Well," said the horse, "I am a generous horse. A great horse like me should help poor animals like you. But I am eating now, as you can see. If there is anything left after I finish, I will give it to you."
He went back to eating. He ate and ate, until the box was completely empty. He even ate the barley on the floor.
Then he looked at the donkey again. "Ah, it is all gone," he said. "What a pity. But don't worry! I will tell you what I will do. Come to my stable this evening, after the sun goes down. When the farmer brings my dinner, I will give you a whole bag of barley. A big bag, full to the top! What do you say to that?"
The donkey looked at the empty box. He looked at the horse's fat, happy face. Then he shook his head slowly.
"Thank you," he said. "But I don't think I will come."
"Why not?" said the horse. "It is a very good offer."
"Just now, you had a full box of barley in front of you," said the donkey. "I asked you for a few small mouthfuls, and you did not give me even one. If you will not give me a little now, when it is easy, why will you give me a whole bag later? I think you are only making a big promise because it costs you nothing."
The horse opened his mouth, but he did not have an answer.
The donkey turned and walked away. On his way back to his shed, he passed the old servant. The servant had an apple in his pocket. He did not make any promises. He just smiled, broke the apple in half, and gave the donkey the bigger piece.
