One summer day, a big brown mule was pulling a carriage along a dusty country road. The carriage was heavy, and the sun was hot. But the mule was strong and patient. He walked at a steady speed, step by step. On top of the carriage, the driver sat with a long whip in his hand.
A little black fly was buzzing around the road. She saw the carriage, and she decided to have a ride. She landed on the edge of one of the big wooden wheels and sat there. She liked it very much. She felt like a queen.
After a while, she looked at the mule. "Hey, you!" she shouted in her tiny voice. "Mule! Why are you so slow? A snail could walk faster than you! Go faster!"
The mule did not answer. He kept walking at the same speed.
"Did you hear me?" shouted the fly. "I said go faster! If you do not go faster, I am going to fly over there and sting your neck! Then you will be sorry!"
The mule turned his head a little and looked at the fly. Then he laughed a slow, deep laugh.
"Little fly," he said, "I hear your words. But I am not afraid of you at all. Do you see the man who is sitting on top of the carriage, above your head? He is the driver. He has a long whip and the reins in his hands. When he wants me to go faster, he uses the whip. When he wants me to go slowly, he pulls the reins. He is the only one I listen to."
"But, but, I am telling you to go fast!" said the fly.
"You are a fly sitting on a wheel," said the mule. "You did not pull this carriage, and you do not know the road. There is a big hill ahead of us. If I run now, I will be tired at the hill. I know very well when to go fast and when to go slow. So please be quiet and enjoy your ride."
The fly was so angry that she flew off the wheel. She buzzed around the mule's head, but he did not even look at her. At last, she got tired and flew away.
At the top of the big hill, the driver smiled. "Good mule," he said. "You did a great job today." And the mule walked on, at exactly the right speed.
