A fox and a lion decided to work together. "You are very strong," said the fox to the lion, "and I am very clever. Let's be partners. I will be your helper."
The lion thought it was a good idea. So they made a plan. Each of them would do the job that he was best at.
The fox had a wonderful nose and sharp eyes. Every morning, he went out and looked for animals. When he found a deer or a wild pig, he ran back to the lion. "There is a fat deer by the river!" he said. Then the lion went there and caught it with his great strength.
They did this every day, and they had plenty of food. But the lion always ate first, and he always ate the biggest share. The fox got only what was left.
After a while, the fox started to feel jealous. "Why does the lion get the most food?" he thought. "I am the one who finds the animals. Without me, he would be hungry. I do half of the work. No, I do more than half! I am going to stop helping him. From now on, I will hunt for myself. Then I will have all the food."
He told the lion about his decision. The lion only looked at him and said, "Good luck."
The next morning, the fox went out to hunt alone. He walked to a farm near the forest. In a field behind a fence, there were many fat white lambs. "Perfect," said the fox. "These lambs are small. I don't need a lion to catch them. I can do it myself."
He crept toward the fence very quietly. He jumped over it and ran toward the nearest lamb. But the lamb started crying loudly. "Baa! Baa!" Then all the lambs were crying.
Suddenly, the farmhouse door opened. Three big dogs came running out, barking. Behind them came the farmer with a big stick. "A fox! Catch him!" he shouted.
The fox turned and ran. He jumped back over the fence, but one of the dogs caught his tail. The fox pulled free, leaving some of his fur behind. He ran into the forest as fast as he could, with the dogs right behind him. At last, he jumped into a deep hole and hid there until dark.
That night, the fox came back to the lion's den. He was tired, hungry, and his tail was hurting. "Maybe," he said slowly, "I am better at finding food than catching it." The lion smiled and shared his dinner with him.
