In a big garden near a king's palace, there lived a peacock. He was very proud of his tail. When he opened it, it was like a huge fan of blue, green, and gold. Every feather had a shining circle on it, like an eye. People came from far away to see him.
One morning, a crane came down to the garden pond to drink some water. She was tall and thin, with long legs and a long neck. Her feathers were plain and gray.
The peacock saw her and walked over. He opened his tail as wide as he could, and he turned around slowly so that she could see every color.
"Good morning," he said. "Look at me. Aren't I beautiful? My feathers are like the clothes of a king. I have blue and green and gold and all the colors of the rainbow. And you?" He laughed. "Your feathers are so gray and boring. You don't have one bit of color anywhere. I feel sorry for you."
The crane drank her water. Then she looked up at the peacock calmly.
"You are right," she said. "Your feathers are very beautiful. Mine are only gray. But tell me, can you fly with those beautiful feathers?"
The peacock stopped smiling. "Well, a little bit," he said. "I can fly up to the garden wall."
"I see," said the crane. "With my plain gray feathers, I fly above the mountains. I fly up through the clouds, and I sing to the stars. I travel to faraway countries, and I see the whole world below me. But you stay down here on the ground, walking around the garden like a chicken."
The peacock did not know what to say. His tail slowly closed.
"Goodbye," said the crane. She opened her wide gray wings and ran a few steps. Then she rose up into the air. Higher and higher she went, over the palace, over the trees, and up into the golden morning sky.
The peacock stood in the garden and watched her. He watched until she was only a tiny dot among the clouds. For the first time in his life, he wanted something that he could not have. That night, for once, the peacock did not show his tail to anyone.
