Late one night, three thieves broke into a small house at the edge of a village. They were hoping to find gold, silver, or at least some food. They searched every room very carefully. But the family was poor, and there was nothing to steal. There was no gold, no silver, and only a little old bread.
"This is a waste of time," said the first thief.
"Wait," said the second thief. "Listen." They heard a small sound from the back of the house. They opened the door and found a rooster sleeping in a basket.
"Well, it is better than nothing," said the third thief. He picked up the rooster and put him in a bag. Then they ran out of the house and back to their secret cave in the forest.
At the cave, they made a fire. "Now we are going to eat this rooster for dinner," said the first thief. He took the rooster out of the bag.
The rooster was very frightened, but he was also clever. He stood up as tall as he could. "Please wait!" he cried. "Please do not eat me! I am a very useful bird. I am important to the people in the village."
The thieves laughed. "Important? You? What do you do?"
"Every morning, before the sun comes up, I crow," said the rooster proudly. "Cock-a-doodle-doo! When people hear me, they wake up. They know it is time to start work. The farmers go to their fields, and the bakers make bread. Without me, everyone will sleep too long. Please let me go. I help so many people!"
The thieves looked at each other. Then the first thief smiled, and it was not a nice smile.
"Thank you for telling us," he said. "Now we are sure that we must eat you."
"But why?" cried the rooster.
"Because you wake people up," said the thief. "We do our work at night, in the dark. We need people to sleep deeply. When you wake them up early, they see us and catch us. You are very good for the village. But you are very bad for our business."
The rooster understood that talking was not going to help. So he flapped his wings, jumped over the fire, and ran out of the cave. He ran all the way home through the dark forest. The next morning, he crowed louder than ever before, and the whole village woke up early.
