It was the hottest summer that anyone could remember. There was no rain for weeks, and all the rivers and ponds were dry. The animals were very thirsty.
One afternoon, a group of wasps and a family of partridges came to a farm. The farmer was standing next to his well, pulling up a bucket of cool, fresh water. The wasps and partridges looked at the water with hungry eyes.
"Good farmer," said the oldest partridge politely. "We are dying of thirst. Please give us some of your water. If you do, we will pay you back. We promise!"
"Oh?" said the farmer. "How will you pay me?"
"We will dig around your grapevines," said the partridge. "We will make the soil soft and loose. Then your vines will grow strong, and you will have the biggest, sweetest grapes in the country!"
"And we will help you too!" buzzed the wasps. "We will guard your farm every day and every night. If any thieves come, we will chase them away with our stings. Nobody will ever steal from you again! Please give us water first!"
The farmer listened carefully. He nodded slowly. Then he smiled.
"Those are very nice promises," he said. "But do you see those two animals over there?" He pointed to two big oxen who were standing in the shade of a tree.
"Those two oxen pull the plow through my fields every day," said the farmer. "They make my soil soft, and that is why my grapes grow so well. And when they are around, no thief dares to come near my farm. They are big, and they have sharp horns."
"But..." said the partridge.
"And the best thing is," said the farmer, "they never made a single promise to me. They never said, 'We will do this, we will do that.' They just do the work, quietly, every day. So who should I give my water to? To you, who only make promises? Or to them, who have already done the work?"
The wasps and the partridges did not know what to say.
The farmer carried his bucket to the oxen. They drank all the water, and they made happy noises. The wasps and partridges flew away to look for water somewhere else.
But the farmer was not a cruel man. That evening, he put a small bowl of water at the edge of his field. In the morning, the bowl was empty, and the farmer smiled.
