It was raining hard, and a farmer named Bob was driving his wagon home from the market. Two big oxen were pulling it slowly along a narrow country road. The wagon was full of food, wood, and other heavy things.
Suddenly, there was a loud noise. The wagon stopped. Bob looked down and saw that the wheels were deep in the mud. The oxen pulled and pulled, but the wagon did not move at all.
Bob did not get down from his seat. He did not look for a stick or a rock. Instead, he looked up at the gray sky and cried out, "Hercules! Great Hercules, please help me! You are the strongest man in the world. Come and pull my wagon out of this mud!"
He waited, but nothing happened. So he shouted again, even louder. "Hercules! Why are you not coming? I am in trouble here! Please, please help me!"
Then a bright light appeared next to the road. A tall man was standing in the rain. He had huge arms, and there was a lion skin over his shoulders. It was Hercules himself.
"Oh, thank you, thank you!" said Bob. "I knew you would come. Please lift my wagon out of the mud."
Hercules did not move. He looked at Bob, and then he looked at the wagon. "Tell me," he said. "What did you do to help yourself?"
Bob did not understand. "Me? Well, I have called you very loudly," he said.
Hercules shook his head. "Get down from your seat. Put your shoulder against that wheel and push. Shout to your oxen so that they pull harder. When you do your best, then you can ask the gods for help. If you only sit and cry, you will pray for nothing."
Bob felt his face turn red. He climbed down into the cold mud. He put his shoulder against the wheel and pushed as hard as he could. "Pull, my friends, pull!" he shouted to the oxen. Slowly, slowly, the wheel began to turn. Then, with a big wet sound, the wagon came out of the mud.
Bob turned around to thank Hercules. But the road was empty, and the rain was stopping. Bob smiled, wiped his hands, and drove on toward home.
