A donkey and a rooster lived together on a farm. Every night, they slept in the same yard, near a pile of soft straw. The donkey was big and gray, and the rooster was small and red. They were good friends.
ある農場で、ロバとオンドリが一緒に暮らしていました。毎晩、二匹は同じ庭の、やわらかいわらの山のそばで眠りました。ロバは大きくて灰色、オンドリは小さくて赤い色でした。二匹は仲よしでした。
One night, a hungry lion came out of the hills. For days, he found nothing to eat. He moved quietly toward the farm, and his eyes were shining in the dark. When he saw the fat donkey, he licked his lips. "Dinner," he thought.
ある夜、おなかをすかせたライオンが、丘から下りてきました。もう何日も、食べるものが見つかっていなかったのです。ライオンは静かに農場に近づいてきました。その目は、暗やみの中で光っていました。よく太ったロバを見ると、ライオンは舌なめずりをしました。「夕ごはんだ」と、ライオンは思いました。
The lion was just going to jump on the donkey. At that moment, the rooster woke up and saw him. He opened his beak and crowed as loudly as he could. "Cock-a-doodle-doo!"
ライオンがまさにロバに飛びかかろうとした、そのときでした。オンドリが目を覚まして、ライオンに気づきました。オンドリはくちばしを開いて、ありったけの大声で鳴きました。「コケコッコー！」
People say that lions hate the sound of a rooster's crow. This lion certainly did. He shook his head, turned around, and ran away from the farm as fast as he could.
ライオンはオンドリの鳴き声が嫌いだと言われています。このライオンも、まさにそうでした。首を振り、向きを変えて、全速力で農場から逃げていきました。
The donkey watched him go, and his mouth fell open. "Did you see that?" he said. "The lion ran away! The great lion is afraid of us!"
ロバはライオンが去っていくのを見て、ぽかんと口を開けました。「見たかい？」と、ロバは言いました。「ライオンが逃げていったぞ！ あの強いライオンが、ぼくたちを怖がっているんだ！」
"He is afraid of my voice," said the rooster. "Not of you."
「あいつが怖がっているのは、ぼくの声だよ」と、オンドリは言いました。「きみじゃない」
But the donkey was not listening. He was feeling brave and strong, braver than ever before. "I am going to chase him," he said. "I will show him who is the king here. He will never come back to our farm again!"
でも、ロバは聞いていませんでした。今までになく勇ましく、強くなった気がしていたのです。「あいつを追いかけてやる」と、ロバは言いました。「ここの王さまはだれなのか、思い知らせてやるんだ。もう二度と、ぼくたちの農場には来ないだろうさ！」
"No, wait!" cried the rooster. "That is a very foolish idea!"
「だめだ、待って！」と、オンドリは叫びました。「それはとてもばかな考えだよ！」
The donkey did not wait. He galloped out of the yard and across the field after the lion. "Run, lion, run!" he shouted. "Here I come!" He was so proud of himself that he did not notice one important thing. He was getting farther and farther from the farm. Soon the rooster's voice was too far away to hear.
ロバは待ちませんでした。庭から飛び出し、野原をつっきって、ライオンを追いかけました。「逃げろ、ライオン、逃げろ！」と、ロバは叫びました。「ほら、行くぞ！」ロバはあまりにも得意になっていたので、一つの大事なことに気づきませんでした。農場からどんどん遠ざかっていたのです。まもなく、オンドリの声は、もう遠すぎて聞こえなくなりました。
The lion heard the donkey behind him. He slowed down. Then he stopped and turned around. There was no rooster now. There was only a big, fat donkey, alone in the dark field.
ライオンは、後ろからロバが来るのを聞きました。そこで速度を落としました。それから立ち止まって、振り返りました。もうオンドリはいません。いるのは、暗い野原にひとりぼっちの、大きくてよく太ったロバだけでした。
The donkey stopped too. Suddenly, he did not feel brave at all. "Oh," he said in a very small voice. "Hello again."
ロバも立ち止まりました。突然、勇ましい気持ちはすっかり消えてしまいました。「あ」と、ロバはとても小さな声で言いました。「やあ、また会ったね」
The lion gave a deep roar and jumped. The donkey turned and ran for his life, but it was too late. The lion's claws were already in his back. That night, the lion had his dinner after all.
ライオンは低くほえて、飛びかかりました。ロバは向きを変えて必死に逃げましたが、もう遅すぎました。ライオンの爪は、すでにロバの背中に食いこんでいました。その夜、ライオンは結局夕ごはんにありついたのでした。
