A fox and a monkey were traveling together along a long country road. They had met that morning, and they were talking about many things. The monkey talked much more than the fox. He liked to talk, especially about himself.
In the afternoon, they came to an old graveyard on a hill. There were many old stones there, covered in green grass and flowers. Some of the stones were very big and grand.
The monkey stopped. He looked around at the graves, and then he sighed loudly. "Ah," he said. "This place makes me sad."
"Why?" asked the fox.
"Because these are the graves of my family," said the monkey. He pointed at the biggest stone. "That one is my great-great-grandfather. He was a famous general. He won a hundred battles." He pointed at another stone. "And that one is my great-grandmother. She was the richest woman in the country. She lived in a palace made of gold."
"Really?" said the fox.
"Oh yes," said the monkey. He was getting excited now. "And over there is my grandfather's grave. He was a great doctor. Kings and queens came to him from all over the world. Everyone in my family was very important and very famous. All of these graves are for them. They built these beautiful stones to remember my family."
The fox listened quietly. She looked at the old stones. Then she looked at the monkey, who was standing on a stone with his chin up.
"Well, my friend," said the fox, "you are very clever."
"Clever? Why?" asked the monkey.
"Because you chose the perfect place to tell your stories," said the fox with a smile. "Everyone here is dead. Not one of them can stand up and say, 'That is not true!' So you can say anything you want."
The monkey's face turned red. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. He climbed down from the stone very slowly.
They walked on together in silence for a long time. At last, the monkey said quietly, "My grandfather was not really a doctor. He sold bananas."
"I like that story much better," said the fox. "It is a good, honest story." And for the rest of the trip, the monkey told only true stories. They were shorter, but the fox enjoyed them a lot more.
