Let's imagine a junior high school student named Mei. She loves reading. On the train, she reads manga on her smartphone. At home, she reads paper books from her grandfather's shelf. One day, her grandfather asked her, "Which do you like better, paper books or e-books?" Mei could not answer at once.
Many people in Japan are asking the same question. In 2024, e-books made up about 36 percent of all the money spent on books and magazines in Japan. Most of these e-books were manga. Sales of e-books are going up. Sales of paper books are going down.
E-books have many good points. You can carry hundreds of books in one small device. You can buy a book at night and start reading it in a minute. You can make the letters bigger, so e-books are easy to read for people who do not see well. Also, e-books do not use paper.
Paper books have good points, too. You can feel the pages and see how much you have read. Many people say that they remember a story better when they read it on paper. Some studies show that people understand long, difficult texts a little better on paper. This is especially true when they do not have much time. And paper books never need a battery!
Schools are also thinking about this question. In Japan, digital English textbooks started coming into elementary and junior high schools in 2024. With them, students can listen to English just by touching the screen. But Sweden went the other way. In 2023, its government decided to spend more money on paper textbooks. Some people there were worried that students were using screens too much.
There are other points to think about. Looking at a bright screen for a long time can make your eyes tired. Reading on a phone in bed may also make it hard to sleep. On the other hand, paper books are heavy, and they need a lot of space on your shelves.
Many people use both. They read manga and news on their phones, and they read novels or study books on paper. Mei thought about this for a few days.
Then she went back to her grandfather. "I like both," she said. "E-books are good for the train, and paper books are good for reading in bed." Her grandfather smiled and gave her another book from his shelf.
What do you think? Some people say that e-books are better, because they are easy to carry, quick to buy, and do not use paper. Others say that paper books are better, because they are easier on the eyes and help us understand and remember what we read.
