One evening in summer, Kenta's mother looked at the electricity bill and sighed. "It is much higher than last year," she said. Kenta's teacher had talked about saving energy in class that week, so Kenta had an idea. "Let's have a family energy challenge," he said.
Why is saving energy important? First, it saves money, and second, it is good for the earth. In Japan, most of our electricity is still made by burning oil, coal, and gas. This gives off carbon dioxide, which makes the earth warmer. Japan also buys almost all of this fuel from other countries. When we use less electricity, Japan needs to buy less fuel.
Kenta's family started with the air conditioner, because it uses a lot of electricity on hot days. Since 2005, the government has asked offices to keep rooms at about 28 degrees Celsius in summer. At home, Kenta's family set the air conditioner a little higher than before and used a fan, too. They closed the curtains during the day to keep the sun out. They also cleaned the air filter, because a dirty filter makes the machine work harder.
Next, they looked at the lights. There were still some old light bulbs in the house. LED lights use only about a quarter of the electricity of old light bulbs, or even less, and they last many times longer. So Kenta's father changed all the old bulbs to LEDs.
Then Kenta found a surprising fact. Many machines use electricity even when they are turned off, if they are still plugged in. TVs, game machines, and microwave ovens with clocks all use a little power all the time. This is called standby power. Studies in some countries found that it used between three and ten percent of a home's electricity. Kenta pulled out the plugs of machines that the family did not use often.
The refrigerator was another target. It runs all day and all night. Kenta's sister liked to open the door and look inside for a long time. Now she decides what she wants before she opens it. The family also stopped putting hot food into the refrigerator and tried not to fill it too full.
Kenta's grandmother had an old idea. She planted goya, or bitter melon, by the window. The plants grew up a net and made a "green curtain." It gave shade and kept the room cooler. The family ate the goya for dinner, too.
A month later, the new bill came, and it was lower than the month before. "We did it!" Kenta shouted, and his mother was happy. But she said, "Remember, we must not get heatstroke. On very hot days and nights, we will still use the air conditioner." Saving energy is important, but staying healthy is even more important.
What do you think? Some people say that every family should try hard to save energy at home, because small actions can add up and help the earth. Others say that saving energy at home is not enough, and that companies and the government should do more, such as making cleaner electricity.
