Deep in the forest stood a pretty little fir tree. The sun was warm and the air was fresh, but the little tree was not happy. It only wanted to be big, like the tall trees around it. When children came to pick berries, they said, "What a sweet little tree!" The tree did not like that at all.
In winter, a hare often came running and jumped right over the little tree. That made the tree very angry. "Oh, I want to be tall!" it thought. "Then I can see the wide world."
Every autumn, men came and cut down the biggest trees. "Where are they going?" the fir tree asked. A stork said, "I saw many new ships at sea. They had tall masts, and the masts smelled like fir trees." "Oh, I want to go to sea too!" said the little tree.
"Be happy that you are young," said the sunbeams. "Enjoy the fresh air and your young life." But the fir tree did not understand.
At Christmas, men cut down some young trees. They were not big, but they were very pretty. "Where are they going?" asked the fir tree. "We know!" said the sparrows. "We looked in at the windows in the town. The trees stand in warm rooms. People hang apples, toys and hundreds of candles on them!"
"And then?" asked the fir tree. "We didn't see any more," said the sparrows. "Oh, that is better than the sea!" cried the tree. "I can't wait for Christmas!"
The next Christmas, the fir tree was the first to be cut down. It fell with a sigh, and it felt sad to leave its home. It was carried into a large, beautiful room. There, people hung candies, apples, little toys and colorful paper on it, and at the top they put a golden star.
That evening, the candles were lit. The doors opened, and the children ran in. They danced around the tree and took all the presents. Then a fat little man told them a story about Humpty-Dumpty. Humpty-Dumpty fell down the stairs, but he still married a princess. "Maybe I will marry a princess too!" thought the tree.
"Tomorrow they will dress me up again," thought the tree. But the next morning, servants pulled it out of the room and carried it up to the dark attic. They left it in a corner and forgot all about it.
"It's winter now," thought the tree. "The ground is hard, so they can't plant me. They will put me outside in spring. How kind they are!" Some little mice came to visit. The tree told them about the forest and about Christmas Eve. "How happy you were!" said the mice. "Yes," said the tree. "Those really were happy times."
The tree told the mice the story of Humpty-Dumpty again and again. Then some rats came. "Is that the only story you know?" they said. "How boring!" After that, even the mice stopped coming. "It was nice when they sat around me," said the tree sadly.
In spring, some people carried the tree out into the sunny yard. "Now I will live!" it cried. The roses were blooming, and the birds were singing. But the tree's branches were yellow and dry. Only the golden star was still at the top.
A boy pulled off the star and laughed. Then a man cut the tree into small pieces for the fire. The wood burned with a soft sound, like little sighs. The tree thought of summer days in the forest and of Christmas Eve. "All gone!" it thought. "I was happy then, but I did not know it!"
The tree was gone, and now this story is over, too. All stories end at last.
