Once there was a widow who had two daughters. The older daughter was just like her mother, proud and unkind. The younger daughter was just like her late father, gentle and polite, and she was very beautiful.
The mother loved the older daughter, because she was like her. But she did not love the younger one at all. She made her eat in the kitchen and work all day. Twice a day, the girl had to walk to a spring far from the house and carry back a big jug of water.
One day, at the spring, a poor old woman came to her. "Please, my dear, give me a drink." "Of course," said the girl. She washed the jug, filled it with the cleanest water and held it up so that the old woman could drink easily.
After she drank, the old woman said, "You are so good and kind that I must give you a gift." She was really a fairy. "Each time you speak, a flower or a jewel will come out of your mouth."
When the girl came home, her mother shouted, "Why are you so late?" "I'm sorry, Mother," said the girl, and two roses, two pearls and two big diamonds came out of her mouth. "What is this?" cried her mother. "Where did they come from, my child?" It was the first time she had ever called her "my child."
The girl told her everything, and more diamonds and flowers fell out. "I must send your sister there!" said the mother. "Fanny, go to the spring. When a poor woman asks for a drink, give it to her nicely."
"I don't want to carry water like a servant!" said Fanny. "You will go, and right now!" So Fanny went, grumbling all the way.
At the spring, a beautifully dressed lady came out of the woods and asked her for a drink. It was the same fairy, but now she looked like a princess. "Do you think I came here to give you water?" said Fanny rudely. "Drink from the spring yourself!"
"You are not very kind," said the fairy calmly. "So here is your gift. Each time you speak, a snake or a toad will come out of your mouth."
When Fanny got home, her mother cried, "Well, my daughter?" "Well, Mother!" answered Fanny, and two snakes and two toads jumped out of her mouth. "Oh, no!" cried the mother. "This is your sister's fault!" And she ran to hit the younger girl.
The poor girl ran away into the forest. There the king's son, coming home from hunting, found her crying. "Why are you here all alone?" he asked. "My mother chased me away," she said, and pearls and diamonds fell from her mouth. The prince fell in love with her and took her to the palace, where they were married.
As for Fanny, she became so unpleasant that even her own mother sent her away. At last she went off alone into the deep forest, and no one ever saw her again.
