A little boy got a box of tin soldiers. There were twenty-five of them, and they were all brothers, because they were made from the same old tin spoon. They all looked the same, except one. He had only one leg, because there was not enough tin for him. But he stood as straight and strong as the others.
On the table there was a beautiful paper castle. At its open door stood a little paper dancer. She wore a white dress and a thin blue ribbon with a shining star on it. She lifted one leg so high behind her that the soldier could not see it. "She has only one leg, like me," he thought. "She would be the perfect wife for me."
That night, when everyone was asleep, the toys came to life and played. But the soldier and the dancer did not move. She stood on the tip of her toe, and he stood on his one leg. He never took his eyes off her.
At midnight, the lid of a little box flew open, and out jumped a black goblin on a spring. "Tin soldier!" he said. "Stop looking at her!" But the soldier did not listen. "Just wait until tomorrow!" said the goblin.
The next morning, the boy put the tin soldier on the windowsill. Maybe it was the goblin, or maybe it was the wind, but the window flew open. The soldier fell down, down, three floors to the street. He landed upside down between two stones.
Soon it began to rain hard. After the rain, two boys came along. "Look, a tin soldier!" they said. "Let's give him a boat ride." They made a boat out of newspaper, put the soldier in it, and let it go down the water at the side of the street.
The paper boat went up and down and round and round. The soldier was afraid, but he did not show it. He looked straight ahead and held his gun. Then the boat went into a long, dark tunnel under the street.
A big water rat lived in the tunnel. "Do you have a passport?" it shouted. "Show me your passport!" The soldier said nothing and held his gun tighter.
At the end of the tunnel, the water fell into a big canal. The paper boat filled with water and began to fall apart. As the water came over his head, the soldier thought of the little dancer. "I will never see her again," he thought.
Just then, a big fish swallowed him. Inside the fish it was dark and narrow. But the soldier lay there bravely and held his gun.
The fish was caught and sold at the market, and now the cook was opening it in a kitchen. "The tin soldier!" she cried. It was the same house, the same room and the same children. And there was the paper castle with the little dancer!
The soldier was so happy that he almost cried tin tears. But a soldier does not cry. He looked at the dancer, and she looked at him, but they did not say a word.
Then, for no reason, one of the little boys picked up the soldier and threw him into the stove. Maybe it was the goblin again. The soldier felt a terrible heat. He was beginning to melt, but he still stood straight and looked at the dancer.
Suddenly a door opened, and the wind caught the little dancer. She flew like a fairy right into the stove, next to the soldier. In a moment, she was gone in a bright flame, and the soldier melted away.
The next morning, the maid cleaned out the stove. In the ashes, she found a little tin heart. And next to it was the dancer's star, black from the fire.
