A tired soldier was walking home after a long war. He was very hungry. At last he came to a small village. "Maybe someone here will give me a little food," he thought.
But the people in the village saw him coming. "Another hungry soldier!" they said. "We don't have enough food for ourselves." They quickly hid their bread, their meat and their vegetables. When the soldier knocked on their doors, everyone said the same thing: "Sorry, we have nothing. It was a bad year."
The soldier smiled. "That's all right," he said loudly in the village square. "I don't need your food. I'll make stone soup. I only need a big pot, some water and a fire."
The villagers were curious. "Stone soup? What's that?" They brought him a big pot, filled it with water and made a fire.
The soldier took a smooth gray stone from his bag. He put it into the pot very carefully, as if it were made of gold. Then he stirred the water and tasted it.
"Mmm. It's going to be a wonderful soup. Of course, stone soup is even better with a little salt." "I have some salt," said a woman, and she ran home to get it.
The soldier stirred and tasted again. "Delicious! But last time I made it with a few carrots, and it was really excellent." "I think I have a few carrots," said a farmer, and he brought them.
"Ah," said the soldier, "a cabbage would make it a soup for a king." A woman brought a cabbage. Then someone brought potatoes, someone brought onions, and someone brought a little meat. "If only we had some bread," said the soldier, "this would be a real feast." Soon there was bread, too, and others brought tables and chairs.
At last the soup was ready. Everyone sat down and ate together in the square. "What a soup!" they said. "And it's made from a stone!" They talked and laughed and sang until late at night.
The next morning, the soldier got ready to leave. The villagers came to say goodbye. "Thank you for teaching us how to make stone soup," they said. The soldier smiled and gave them the stone. "Keep it," he said. "But remember, it only works when everyone brings something."
