Riku is a junior high school student in Japan. One evening, he was doing his English homework, and he was not happy. "Why do I have to study English?" he asked his older sister, Mika. "I live in Japan. Everyone here speaks Japanese." Many students ask the same question. Let's think about it with Riku.
"English is not only for people in America or the UK," Mika said. "People use it all over the world." About 1.5 billion people speak English. But fewer than 400 million of them learned it as their first language. Most English speakers are like Riku. They learned English as a second or foreign language, and many of them studied it at school.
People from different countries often use English to talk to each other. For example, when a Japanese company works with a company in Thailand, the workers may write emails in English. At big international meetings and sports events, people often use English, too. In this way, English is like a bridge between people.
English can also open the door to more information. In 2026, one study looked at millions of websites. About half of them were in English, and only about five percent were in Japanese. If you can read English, you can find many more news stories, videos, and ideas. You can also tell people around the world about Japan.
"But my phone can translate for me," Riku said. Mika smiled. "That's true. Translation apps are very useful. But when you talk with a new friend, it is nice to use your own words. You can share jokes and feelings more easily."
Of course, some people think that not everyone needs English. Many jobs in Japan do not use English at all. These people say that students should have more time for other subjects, like math, science, or music. Students who love English can study it more, and other students can choose different things.
In Japan, children start learning English in the third grade of elementary school. Some people think this is too early. They say that children should learn Japanese well first. Others think that it is a good idea, because young children are not afraid of making mistakes.
Riku thought about his dream. He wants to be a soccer player. "Many Japanese players play in Europe now," he said. "If I play there someday, English will help me talk with my teammates." He opened his notebook again. This time, his homework did not feel so bad.
What do you think? Some people say that every student should learn English, because it helps us talk with people around the world and find more information. Others say that English should not be required for everyone, because translation apps are getting better and many people do not use English in their jobs.
