Many workers look forward to Friday, because the weekend is coming. But imagine a life with a three-day weekend every week. This idea, called the four-day week, has been tested in many parts of the world. Some people believe that it will be the future of work. Others are not so sure.
There are several kinds of four-day weeks. In one kind, people work fewer hours, for example 32 hours instead of 40, but they get the same pay. In this case, companies hope that workers will do the same amount of work in less time. In another kind, people work the same number of hours, but in four longer days. In a third kind, people work less and also get less pay.
One of the largest tests took place in the United Kingdom in 2022. Sixty-one companies and about 2,900 workers took part from June to December. The companies were very different, from a small fish and chip shop to online businesses. Workers kept the same pay but worked fewer hours.
The results got a lot of attention. When the test ended, 56 of the 61 companies decided to continue the four-day week, and 18 of them made it a permanent rule. Many workers said that they felt less stress and were less tired. The companies' income stayed about the same. However, these companies joined the test because they were interested in the idea, so some experts say that the results may not be the same for all companies.
Iceland also tried shorter working weeks. From 2015 to 2019, about 2,500 workers, many of them in public offices, had their working hours cut to 35 or 36 hours a week without a cut in pay. In 2022, Belgium made a new rule that allows workers to ask to do a full week's work in four days.
Japan has seen some tests, too. In August 2019, Microsoft Japan closed its offices every Friday. Sales per worker were about 40 percent higher than in August of the year before, and the offices used about 23 percent less electricity than in August 2016. However, the company said that these results did not come from the test alone. In 2021, the Japanese government asked companies to think about letting workers choose a four-day week. Some companies in Japan now offer this choice.
To make a four-day week work, companies usually need to change the way they work. For example, they may cut long meetings and use online tools to share information quickly. Workers may need to plan their tasks more carefully and stop doing work that is not really necessary. Some companies let workers take different days off, so that the office can stay open five days a week.
Why do supporters like the four-day week? First, workers can rest more, so they may be healthier and happier. They can spend more time with their families or on hobbies, study, or volunteer work. Second, companies may find it easier to hire and keep good workers. This is important in Japan, where many companies do not have enough workers. Third, if fewer people commute every day, there may be less traffic and less energy used.
However, there are also concerns. Not every job can be done in four days. Hospitals, nursing homes, stations, and convenience stores need workers every day, so they would need more staff. If people work four long days, they may become very tired by the end of each day. Small companies may not be able to pay the same salaries for fewer hours. Some customers may also be unhappy if a company is closed on Fridays.
Some people also worry that workers will have to work harder and faster to finish the same amount of work. Meetings may become shorter, and there may be less time to chat with coworkers. Not everyone wants this. Some workers say that they prefer a normal five-day week with less pressure each day.
What do you think? Some people say that companies should introduce a four-day week, because workers will be healthier and work more efficiently. Others say that a four-day week is not realistic, because many jobs need people every day and small companies cannot afford it.
