A student named Riku lives in Gunma. On August 5, 2025, he heard surprising news on TV. In Isesaki, a city in Gunma, the temperature went up to 41.8 degrees Celsius. It was the highest temperature ever recorded in Japan. "Is this really Japan?" Riku thought.
The summer of 2025 was the hottest summer in Japan since records began in 1898. From June to August, the average temperature was much higher than usual. In many cities, days over 35 degrees are not rare anymore. Riku's grandmother often says that summers were much cooler when she was a child.
Why is this happening? One big reason is climate change. When we burn oil, coal, and gas, we put carbon dioxide into the air. This gas keeps heat near the earth, so the earth is getting warmer. Cities are also hot because roads and buildings keep the heat of the sun, even at night.
Hot weather can be dangerous. When the body gets too hot, people can get heatstroke. They may feel sick, weak, or dizzy, and some people must go to the hospital. From May to September 2025, more than 100,000 people in Japan were taken to the hospital by ambulance because of heatstroke. This was the largest number since the national survey began in 2008. More than half of them were 65 years old or older.
The government now gives warnings on very hot days. Since 2021, a "heatstroke alert" has been used all over Japan. In 2024, the government started an even stronger "special alert" for the most dangerous days. Some towns also open cool places, such as libraries and community centers, where anyone can come in and rest.
Schools are changing, too. On dangerous days, some schools stop club activities outside or move them into the gym. Students carry big water bottles, and most classrooms now have air conditioners.
There are simple ways to protect yourself. Drink water often, even when you are not thirsty. When you sweat a lot, your body also needs a little salt. Wear a hat or use a parasol. In Japan, more and more men use parasols, too. Use the air conditioner at home, and rest in a cool place when you feel tired.
It is also important to think about other people. Older people sometimes do not notice that they are too hot. Small children cannot always say how they feel. Riku now calls his grandmother on hot days. "Are you drinking enough water?" he asks her.
Some people say that big sports events in summer should be held in the early morning or evening, or moved to a cooler season. Others say that these events are an important tradition, and that players can stay safe with more breaks and more water.
What do you think? Some people say that schools should stop all outdoor club activities on very hot days, because students' health is the most important thing. Others say that students can still practice outside if they take breaks and drink water, because sports are good for both the body and the mind.
