Last Sunday, a student named Riko went to a family restaurant with her family. She ordered noodles on a tablet at the table. A few minutes later, a small robot came to their table. It had a cat face on its screen, and it was carrying their food. "Here is your food," the robot said in a happy voice. Riko's little brother laughed and touched its head.
この前の日曜日、リコという生徒が、家族とファミリーレストランに行きました。リコはテーブルのタブレットでめん類を注文しました。数分後、小さなロボットがテーブルにやって来ました。画面にはネコの顔が映っていて、料理を運んでいます。「お料理をお持ちしました」と、ロボットは楽しそうな声で言いました。リコの弟は笑って、ロボットの頭をなでました。
Robots like this are now common in Japan. By the end of 2022, one big restaurant company was using about three thousand serving robots in its restaurants. Why? One reason is that many restaurants cannot find enough workers. The robots carry the heavy plates, so the workers can spend more time with customers.
こうしたロボットは、今の日本ではめずらしくありません。2022年の終わりまでに、ある大手のレストラン会社は、自分の店で約3000台の配膳ロボットを使うようになっていました。なぜでしょうか。理由の一つは、働く人が足りない店が多いことです。重いお皿はロボットが運んでくれるので、店員はお客さんの相手にもっと時間を使えます。
There are robots in Riko's home, too. Her family has a robot vacuum cleaner. It cleans the floor when nobody is at home. It uses sensors to find walls and chairs, so it does not hit them very often. Her father also has a smart speaker. He asks, "What will the weather be like tomorrow?" and the speaker answers him.
リコの家にもロボットがいます。家族はそうじロボットを持っています。だれも家にいない間に、床をそうじしてくれるのです。センサーで壁やいすを見つけるので、ぶつかることはあまりありません。お父さんはスマートスピーカーも持っています。お父さんが「明日の天気はどう?」とたずねると、スピーカーが答えてくれます。
Riko's school uses AI, too. Last spring, a new student named Ana came from Brazil. She could not speak Japanese well, and Riko could not speak Portuguese. So they used a translation app on a school tablet. Riko spoke in Japanese, and the app translated her words into Portuguese. It was not perfect, but the two girls soon became good friends.
リコの学校でも、AIが使われています。去年の春、アナという生徒がブラジルから転校してきました。アナは日本語があまり話せず、リコもポルトガル語が話せませんでした。そこで二人は、学校のタブレットの翻訳アプリを使いました。リコが日本語で話すと、アプリがその言葉をポルトガル語に訳してくれたのです。完ぺきではありませんでしたが、二人はすぐに仲よしになりました。
Many of these machines use AI, or artificial intelligence. AI is a kind of computer program that can learn from a lot of information. For example, a translation app learned from millions of sentences in many languages. That is why it can change Japanese into other languages very quickly.
こうした機械の多くは、AI、つまり人工知能を使っています。AIとは、たくさんの情報から学ぶことのできるコンピューターのプログラムの一種です。たとえば翻訳アプリは、さまざまな言語の何百万もの文から学びました。だから、日本語をあっという間にほかの言語に変えられるのです。
Robots and AI help us in many ways. They can do boring or hard work. They can work all night without getting tired. They can also help people who need support. For example, some machines help care workers when they lift older people, and some apps can read text out loud for people who cannot see well.
ロボットやAIは、いろいろな形で私たちの役に立っています。退屈な仕事やきつい仕事をしてくれます。疲れることなく、夜通し働くこともできます。手助けが必要な人を支えることもできます。たとえば、介護職員がお年寄りをだき上げるときに力を貸してくれる機械があります。目がよく見えない人のために、文字を読み上げてくれるアプリもあります。
But some people are worried. Riko's grandmother says, "I don't like ordering on a tablet. I want to talk to a person." When machines do more work, people may talk to each other less. Some people are also afraid that robots will take jobs away from people. Translation apps also make strange mistakes sometimes, and they cannot understand our feelings well.
でも、心配する人もいます。リコのおばあさんは「タブレットで注文するのは好きじゃないね。人と話したいよ」と言います。機械がする仕事がふえると、人と人が話す機会がへるかもしれません。ロボットが人の仕事をうばってしまうのでは、と不安に思う人もいます。また、翻訳アプリはときどきおかしなまちがいをしますし、私たちの気持ちをうまく理解することもできません。
After dinner, Riko thought about it. "The robot was cute," she said, "but the woman at the register was really kind, too. Maybe we need both." Robots are good at carrying plates. People are good at smiling, listening, and helping in their own special way.
夕ごはんのあと、リコはこのことを考えてみました。「ロボットはかわいかった。でも、レジの店員さんもすごく親切だったな。両方必要なのかも」と、リコは言いました。お皿を運ぶのは、ロボットが得意です。にっこりほほえみ、話を聞き、その人ならではのやり方で手を貸すのは、人間が得意なのです。
What do you think? Some people say we should use more robots and AI, because they can do hard work when there are not enough workers. Others say we should be careful, because people need to talk to people, and machines cannot understand our feelings.
あなたはどう思いますか。ロボットやAIをもっと使うべきだ、と言う人もいます。働く人が足りないとき、きつい仕事を代わりにしてくれるからです。一方、慎重になるべきだ、と言う人もいます。人には人と話すことが必要で、機械には私たちの気持ちが理解できないからです。
