"Where are you going, Hans?" asked his mother. "To see Grethel," said Hans. "Be good, Hans." "I will be good. Goodbye, Mother." "Goodbye, Hans."
Hans came to Grethel's house. "Good morning, Grethel." "Good morning, Hans. What nice thing are you bringing me?" "I am bringing nothing. I want you to give me something." So Grethel gave Hans a needle.
Hans stuck the needle into a cart full of hay and walked home behind the cart. "Good evening, Mother." "Good evening, Hans. What did Grethel give you?" "A needle." "Where is it?" "I stuck it in a hay cart." "That was silly, Hans. You should put a needle in your sleeve." "Never mind. I will do better next time."
The next day Hans went to Grethel again, and she gave him a knife. Hans stuck the knife in his sleeve. "That was silly, Hans," said his mother. "You should put a knife in your pocket." "Never mind. I will do better next time."
Next, Grethel gave him a young goat. Hans tied its legs and put it in his pocket. When he got home, the poor goat could hardly breathe. "That was silly, Hans. You should put a rope around a goat's neck and lead it." "Never mind. I will do better next time."
Next, Grethel gave him a piece of bacon. Hans tied a rope around the bacon and pulled it along the road behind him. The dogs came and ate it all. When he got home, there was only the rope in his hand. "That was silly, Hans. You should carry bacon on your head." "Never mind. I will do better next time."
Next, Grethel gave him a calf. Hans put the calf on his head, and it kicked him in the face. "That was silly, Hans. You should lead a calf with a rope and put it in the barn." "Never mind. I will do better next time."
"Where are you going, Hans?" "To see Grethel, Mother." "Be good, Hans." "I will be good. Goodbye, Mother."
"Good morning, Grethel." "Good morning, Hans. What nice thing are you bringing me?" "I am bringing nothing. I want you to give me something." "Then I will come home with you," said Grethel.
Hans put a rope around Grethel, led her home, and tied her up in the barn. Then he threw some grass in front of her, and he went in to his mother.
"Where is Grethel, Hans?" "I led her with a rope, tied her in the barn, and gave her some grass." "That was very silly, Hans! You should throw kind eyes at a girl. That means you should look at her kindly." "Never mind. I will do better."
So Hans went into the barn. He stood in front of Grethel and opened his eyes as wide as he could. Then he moved his hands as if he was throwing his eyes at her. "Here, Grethel! Kind eyes! Catch!"
Grethel got very angry. She pulled herself free and ran away. After that, she did not want to marry Hans anymore.
