There was once a poor prince. His kingdom was very small, but he wanted to marry the Emperor's daughter. So he sent her two gifts.
The first gift was a rose. It grew on his father's grave, and it bloomed only once in five years. It smelled so sweet that anyone who smelled it forgot all their troubles. The second gift was a nightingale. When it sang, it sounded like all the beautiful songs in the world.
The Princess opened the boxes. "Oh, it's a real rose," she said. "Not a pretty toy rose. How boring!" Then she heard the nightingale. "Is it a toy bird?" "No, it is a real bird," said the servants. "Then let it fly away," said the Princess. And she would not see the prince at all.
But the prince did not give up. He made his face brown and dirty, pulled his cap down low and went to the palace. "Do you need a worker?" he asked the Emperor. "Yes," said the Emperor. "I need someone to look after my pigs." So the prince became the Emperor's swineherd.
He lived in a little room next to the pigs. All day he worked, and in the evening he made a pretty little pot with bells around it. When the pot was boiling, the bells played an old song: "Oh, dear Augustine, all is gone, gone, gone!" And if you put your finger in the steam, you could smell what everyone in the town was cooking for dinner.
The Princess walked by with her ladies. She heard the song and stopped. "That's the only song I can play on the piano!" she said. "Go and ask the swineherd how much that pot costs."
A lady went to ask and came back red in the face. "He wants ten kisses from the Princess," she said. "How rude!" cried the Princess, and walked away. But after a few steps, the bells played again. "Well," she said, "I will give him ten kisses. But you must all stand around us, so nobody can see."
So the ladies stood around them, and the swineherd got his ten kisses. The Princess got the pot. All evening she and her ladies smelled the steam. "We know what everyone is having for dinner!" they laughed.
The next day, the swineherd made a rattle. When you turned it, it played every dance in the world. "How wonderful!" said the Princess. "How much?" This time the swineherd wanted a hundred kisses. "He's crazy!" said the Princess. But she wanted the rattle very much. So the ladies stood around them again, and the kissing began.
Just then, the Emperor came out onto his balcony. "What is going on down there by the pigs?" he said. He put on his slippers and hurried down quietly. The ladies were busy counting, "Eighty-five, eighty-six," so they did not see him. When the Emperor saw his daughter kissing the swineherd, he was very angry. "Get out of my kingdom, both of you!" he shouted.
So the Princess and the swineherd stood outside the gate in the rain. "Oh, how unhappy I am!" she cried. "Why didn't I marry that handsome prince?"
The swineherd went behind a tree. He washed his face and took off his old clothes. Then he stepped out in his fine prince's clothes. He looked so handsome that the Princess began to bow to him.
"I have only come to tell you this," he said. "I don't respect you anymore. You did not want an honest prince. You did not understand the rose or the nightingale. But you kissed a swineherd for a toy. Now you have what you wanted." Then he went back to his own kingdom and shut the door.
The Princess stood outside alone and sang, "Oh, dear Augustine, all is gone, gone, gone!"
