Many years ago there lived an emperor who loved new clothes more than anything. He spent all his money on them. He had a different coat for every hour of the day.
One day two cheats came to the city. They said they were weavers who could make the most beautiful cloth in the world. "Our cloth is very special," they said. "It is invisible to anyone who is stupid or not good at his job."
"What wonderful cloth!" thought the emperor. "If I wear it, I'll know which of my men are not good at their jobs. I'll know who is clever and who is stupid." He gave the two men a lot of money and gold thread and told them to begin at once.
The cheats set up two looms and pretended to work, but there was nothing on the looms at all. They put the gold thread in their own bags and worked late into the night at their empty looms.
After a while, the emperor sent his wise old minister to see the cloth. The old man looked and looked at the empty looms. "Oh, no!" he thought.
"I can't see anything! Am I stupid? Am I not good at my job? No one must know!"
So he said, "It's beautiful! What colors! I'll tell the emperor." Another officer went, and he did the same.
At last the emperor went himself. "Isn't it wonderful?" said the two officers, pointing at the empty looms. "What?" thought the emperor. "I can't see anything! Am I not good enough to be emperor? That would be terrible!"
"Oh, it's very beautiful," he said aloud. All his men said, "Beautiful! Beautiful!" They told him to wear the new clothes in the great parade.
On the morning of the parade, the cheats held up their arms as if they were holding something. "Here are the trousers, here is the coat, and here is the long cloak. They are as light as a spider's web." They helped the emperor take off his clothes and put on the new ones. The emperor turned around and around in front of the mirror.
Then he walked in the parade through the streets. All the people cried, "How beautiful the emperor's new clothes are!" No one wanted to seem stupid.
But then a little child said, "But he has nothing on!" "Listen to the child," said the father. People began to whisper, and soon everyone was shouting, "He has nothing on!"
The emperor shivered, because he knew they were right. But he thought, "I must go on with the parade." So he walked on even more proudly than before, and his men carried the long cloak that wasn't there at all.
