Ren Aoki was a university student in Kyoto. He was twenty years old, and he studied English literature. Three days a week, after his classes, he worked at Tachibana Books. It was a small secondhand bookshop on a quiet street near the Kamo River.
The shop was very old. The wooden floor made noises when you walked on it, and the air smelled of paper and dust. There were books everywhere: on the shelves, on the floor, and even on the narrow stairs to the second floor.
The owner, Mr. Tachibana, was seventy-eight. He had white hair, a small white mustache, and reading glasses on a chain around his neck. He always wore the same brown knitted vest. He did not talk much, and he never smiled. But Ren liked him. The old man knew every book in the shop.
One cold afternoon in late November, Mr. Tachibana said, "Ren, please clean the English corner today. Nobody has touched it for years." Then he went out to the bank.
The English corner was at the back of the shop, in the darkest place. Ren was taking down old books and cleaning them when the bell over the door rang. A woman came in. She wore a long gray coat and a red scarf.
"Excuse me," she said quietly. "Do you have an old copy of The Secret Garden? In English?"
Ren looked and looked, but he could not find it. "I'm sorry," he said. The woman looked up at the stairs to the second floor for a moment. Then she said, "Thank you," and left quickly.
An hour later, Ren pulled out a row of heavy old dictionaries. Behind them, against the wall, there was a thin green book. The title on the cover was The Secret Garden. "So it was here," Ren thought. "That woman wanted this book."
When he opened it, a pale blue envelope fell to the floor. On the front, there was one word in beautiful handwriting: "Hana."
Ren knew it was not his letter. But the envelope was not closed, and he was curious. Inside was a small card, and the English on it was simple:
"My dear Hana, Happy eighteenth birthday! This is a game, and it is my present to you. Read this book. Like Mary, you must find the key. The robin will show you the way, by the river of ducks. With love, Mom. March 1996."
"Nineteen ninety-six," Ren said. "That's thirty years ago." Who was Hana? And why was her birthday present still hidden behind the dictionaries?
Just then, the bell rang again. Mr. Tachibana was back. He saw the blue card in Ren's hand, and he stopped. His face turned white.
"Where did you find that?" he asked. His voice sounded strange.
"In this book, behind the dictionaries," said Ren. "Do you know who Hana is?"
For a long time, the old man said nothing. Then he took off his glasses. "Put it back," he said. "It's nothing. It's an old story." He walked up the stairs slowly and closed the door.
Ren stood alone among the books. He looked at the card again. Then, slowly, he put it in his pocket.
Above him, he heard a sound. It was very quiet, but he knew what it was. Mr. Tachibana, the man who never smiled, was crying.
