That night, Ren read Little Women at his desk. It was a long story about four sisters in America: Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. Their family did not have much money, but they were kind and loved each other very much.
Ren liked Jo best. She was loud and brave, and she wanted to be a writer. She wrote stories in the attic and sent them to newspapers. Some people laughed at her dream, but she never stopped writing.
Then Ren opened the second envelope. The card said: "My dear Hana, Jo dreamed of writing, and you dream of England. Never let anyone laugh at your dream. Not even your father. Next, find the man who makes words from metal, near the old market. Love, Mom."
"Not even your father," Ren said slowly. So Hana's father did not like her dream.
The next day, he met Mika at Nishiki Market. People call it "Kyoto's kitchen." It is a long, narrow street full of food shops. "Words from metal," Mika said, eating a fish cake. "I think it's a letterpress printer. In the old days, printers made words with small metal letters."
They asked in many shops. At last, an old man selling pickles pointed down a side street. "Ueda Printing," he said. "Very old. It's still working."
The printing shop was small and full of black machines. On the walls, thousands of tiny metal letters were sleeping in wooden boxes. An old man with gray hair and ink on his hands looked up. "Yes?"
Ren showed him the two cards. Mr. Ueda read them twice. Then he went to a cupboard and took down a small box with dust on top.
"Sachiko-san," he said. "I remember her well. She came here in the spring of 1996. She asked me to print a little book. A book of poems. Her daughter's poems, in English."
Inside the box were ten small books with soft blue covers. The title was Rain on the Kamo River. Under it was a name: Hana Tachibana.
Ren opened one. The poems were short and beautiful. They were about the river, the old shop, the rain, and a father who read stories to his little girl on Sundays.
"Sachiko-san wanted to give these to her daughter for her birthday," said Mr. Ueda. "But she never came to take them. Later, I heard about the trouble. The daughter wanted to study in England, and her father said no. They had a terrible fight. She left Kyoto on the night before her birthday, and she never came back."
Mika's eyes were wet. "That's so sad," she said.
In the back of one book, there was a third blue envelope. Mr. Ueda gave Ren that copy. "Take it," he said. "Books should be read, not kept in boxes."
It was dark when Ren got back to Tachibana Books. The lights were still on. Mr. Tachibana was sitting behind the counter, waiting for him. The Secret Garden was on the counter in front of him.
"Ren," he said in a low, cold voice. "Mrs. Nakai called me. I know what you are doing." He stood up. "Stop it. Now."
