Long ago, in a small village, there lived a poor woman named Anna. Her husband was dead, and she had very little money. She had only one sheep. His name was Snow, because his wool was white and soft.
Every summer, it was time to cut the wool. Anna could sell it in the market and buy bread for the winter. In the village, there was a man who cut wool for everyone. He was an expert, and he was very fast. But he wanted one coin for each sheep.
"One coin!" Anna said to herself. "That is too much money. I am going to cut the wool myself. How difficult can it be?"
So she took out a big old pair of iron scissors. She sat down on a stool and called Snow to her side. Snow walked over happily, because he loved Anna.
Anna started to cut. But the scissors were heavy, and her hands were not strong. She did not know how to hold the sheep. Snow moved, and the scissors moved too. "Ouch!" said Snow. She cut a little of his skin along with the wool. Anna kept going. Snip, snip. "Ouch! Ouch!" Soon there were little red marks on his white body.
At last, Snow stepped away from her. He turned his head and looked at her with sad eyes.
"Why are you hurting me, Anna?" he said. "What do you want from me? Do you want my wool, or do you want my meat?"
Anna stopped. She was very surprised that her sheep could talk.
"If you want my meat," said Snow, "go to the butcher. He will do his job in one moment, and I will not feel much pain. But if you want my wool, go to the wool expert. He will cut it all and never hurt me. You are trying to save one coin. But you are not doing the job well. And you are hurting your only friend."
Anna looked at the scissors in her hand. Then she looked at poor Snow. Her eyes filled with tears. "You are right," she said. "I am so sorry."
The next day, she took Snow to the wool expert and paid him one coin. He cut all the wool in a few minutes, and Snow did not feel any pain. Anna sold the beautiful wool for a good price. And Snow got an extra apple for dinner that night.
