A young deer was running through the forest. Behind her, she could hear the sound of horses and the shouts of hunters. "There it is! Follow it!" they cried. The deer was very frightened. She ran faster and faster, but the hunters were getting closer.
Then she saw a big grapevine. It was growing over some rocks, and it had huge green leaves. The leaves were so thick that you could not see through them. Without thinking, the deer jumped under the leaves and lay down. She stayed very, very still.
A moment later, the hunters came riding along the path. They were going so fast that they did not look at the grapevine. "Where did it go?" one of them shouted. "It went that way! Hurry!" And they rode past the vine and deeper into the forest.
The deer listened. The sound of the horses was getting quieter and quieter. Soon she could not hear them at all. She took a long breath. "I am safe," she thought. "Thank you, kind grapevine. You saved my life."
She was still lying under the vine. Now that she was not afraid anymore, she began to feel hungry. She looked at the leaves around her. They were young, soft, and green. They looked delicious.
"Just one bite," she said. She ate one leaf. It was very good. So she ate another leaf. And another. Soon she was pulling the leaves down and eating them happily. The vine was shaking and moving every time she pulled.
But one of the hunters had stopped at the end of the path. "Wait," he said to himself. "I think that deer did not come this way." He turned his horse around and looked back. Far away, he saw something strange. The leaves of a big grapevine were shaking, but there was no wind.
He rode back quietly. Now there were holes in the vine, and through them he could see something brown. "There you are," he said. He took out his bow and an arrow.
The deer heard the sound of the bow. She jumped up and ran, but it was too late. The arrow hit her in the leg. She fell down beside the vine.
As she lay there, she looked up at the poor, broken leaves. "This is my own fault," she said sadly. "This vine saved my life. But I was hurting it, the friend who helped me. Now it can't hide me anymore."
