One morning, a farmer named Paul was walking to his fields. On the way, he heard a strange noise from the bushes. He went closer and saw a big eagle. Its leg was caught in a hunter's trap, and it was trying hard to get free.
Paul had never seen an eagle so close before. Its feathers were golden brown, and its eyes were sharp and bright. "What a beautiful bird," he said quietly. "It is wrong to keep you in a trap."
The eagle was afraid and opened its wings, but Paul spoke softly to it. Slowly and carefully, he opened the trap. The eagle pulled its leg out. For a moment, it looked at Paul. Then it flew up into the sky and was gone.
Paul smiled and went to work. He did not think about the eagle again.
A few weeks later, on a very hot day, Paul was working in the fields. At noon, he was tired and hungry. He sat down in the shade of an old stone wall. He had a bundle with him, a cloth with some bread and cheese inside. He put it on top of his head to keep the sun off. Then he leaned back against the wall and closed his eyes.
He did not notice that the old wall was full of cracks. It was about to fall down.
Suddenly, there was a loud cry in the sky. A big eagle came flying down very fast. Before Paul could move, it took the bundle off his head with its claws and flew away with it.
"Hey! My lunch!" Paul jumped up and ran after the eagle. "Come back! That is mine!" The eagle flew low across the field, and Paul ran after it. Then the eagle dropped the bundle on the grass and flew up into a tree.
Paul picked up his lunch. He was angry, and he was breathing hard. "That bird!" he said. He walked back toward the wall to sit down again.
But when he got there, he stopped. The old wall was not standing anymore. It had fallen down, and big heavy stones were lying everywhere. They were lying in the place where he was sitting a few minutes earlier.
Paul looked up at the tree. The eagle was sitting on a branch, looking down at him with its bright, sharp eyes. And now Paul knew. It was the same eagle.
"Thank you, my friend," he said softly. The eagle opened its wings and flew away into the blue sky.
