Long ago, the Sun lived alone in the sky. Every day, he rose in the east and crossed the sky to the west. He gave light and warmth to the whole world. But one day, he made an announcement.
"I am lonely," said the Sun. "I have decided to get married!"
The news went all around the world very quickly. The birds were excited. "A wedding!" they sang. "We will sing at the party!" The flowers were happy. "We will make the wedding beautiful," they said. The bees, the deer, and the rabbits all wanted to come.
But in the ponds and the rivers, the frogs were not happy at all. When they heard the news, they began to croak. At first it was one frog, then ten, then a thousand. Soon all the frogs in the world were croaking together, as loudly as they could. "Croak! Croak! No! No! No!"
The noise was so loud that it went all the way up to the top of a mountain. Zeus, the king of the gods, lived there. Zeus was trying to sleep. He put his hands over his ears. At last, he sat up angrily.
"What is all this noise?" he shouted. "Frogs! Why are you making such a terrible sound?"
The croaking stopped. An old frog jumped up onto a rock. "Great Zeus," he said, "please forgive us. But we are very worried about the Sun's wedding."
"Worried?" said Zeus. "Why? A wedding is a happy thing. Everyone else is excited."
"Think about it, great Zeus," said the old frog. "Right now, there is only one Sun. And even one Sun is too much for us. Every summer, he shines down so hard that our ponds become smaller and smaller. The water dries up, and the mud gets hard, and many of us die in our dry homes."
The other frogs nodded sadly.
"Now the Sun is going to get married," the old frog went on. "And after the wedding, he and his wife will have children. Little suns! Maybe two, maybe five, maybe ten! What will happen to us then? If one Sun can dry up our ponds, what will ten suns do? There will be no water left anywhere in the world!"
Zeus was quiet for a long moment. Then he looked up at the Sun, and he looked down at the frogs.
"Hmm," he said. "You are small, but you think carefully about the future."
Nobody knows what Zeus said to the Sun that night. But we know one thing. Even today, there is only one Sun in the sky. And every summer evening, the frogs still sing in their ponds.
