In a big green meadow, there lived three bulls. One was white, one was black, and one was brown. They were best friends, and they did everything together. They ate grass together, they drank from the river together, and at night, they slept close together.
A hungry lion lived at the edge of the meadow. Every day, he watched the three bulls. "They are so big and fat," he thought. "One of them would give me food for a week." But the lion was afraid to attack them. When he came near, the three bulls stood close together, with their sharp horns facing out. No lion could fight three bulls at the same time.
So the lion thought of a plan. One day, the white bull was eating a little far from the others. The lion came near him and whispered, "I am not here to fight. I only want to tell you something. Did you know that the black bull laughs at you? He says that you are fat and slow."
The white bull was surprised. "Really?" he said.
The next day, the lion went to the black bull. "The brown bull says that you are stupid," he whispered. "And he says that he wants the best grass for himself." Then he went to the brown bull. "The white bull says that you are ugly. He does not want to be your friend anymore."
The lion did this every day. He told lie after lie. And slowly, the three bulls began to believe him. They started to look at each other with angry eyes. They stopped talking. Soon they stopped eating together. The white bull went to the north end of the meadow. The black bull went to the south end. The brown bull went to the far side of the river. Each bull was alone now.
This was exactly what the lion wanted. One evening, he went to the white bull. The white bull looked for his friends, but they were far away. He fought hard, but he was alone, and the lion was too strong.
A week later, the lion went to the black bull. Then, after that, he went to the brown bull. One by one, the lion caught them all.
Just before the lion caught him, the brown bull looked across the empty meadow. "When we were together, nobody could hurt us," he said sadly. "Why did we listen to the lion's lies?" But it was too late. Without his friends, he was not strong at all.
