There was once a beautiful horse who belonged to a rich lord. His coat was black and shining. On his back, there was a red silk blanket with gold on it. There were bright ribbons in his long hair, and little silver bells on his head. When he walked, the bells rang. Everyone turned to look at him, and he loved it.
One morning, the horse was walking along a narrow road to the city. Coming the other way was a small gray donkey. The donkey was carrying a very heavy load of wood and stones. He was walking slowly, and his head was down.
The road was too narrow for both of them. The horse stopped and looked down his long nose at the donkey.
"You there!" said the horse. "Get out of my way! Can't you see who I am? I am the lord's horse. I am the most beautiful horse in the land. Move, you slow, ugly animal! Or I will kick you with my back legs!"
The donkey did not say a word. He moved slowly to the side of the road with his heavy load, and he stood in the mud. The horse walked past him with his nose in the air. His little bells rang happily.
"The gods are watching," the donkey thought quietly. "One day, they will be fair."
Months went by. The horse ran in many races, and he ran very fast. But one day, he ran too hard, and he hurt his chest. After that, he could not breathe well when he ran. He was not fast anymore.
"A slow horse is no use to me," said the lord. "Send him to the farm." So the servants took off his silk blanket, his ribbons, and his silver bells. They took him to a farm far away. There, he had to pull a dirty cart full of old hay and mud every day.
One cloudy afternoon, the horse was pulling his dirty cart along a muddy road. A gray donkey was walking the other way. It was the same donkey.
The donkey stopped and looked at the horse. He saw the mud on his legs and the dirty cart behind him. "Hello," he said. "Where is your red blanket now? Where are your ribbons and your silver bells? You laughed at me because I was carrying a heavy load. Now look at you."
The horse put his head down. He had nothing to say.
The donkey looked at him for a moment. Then his face became softer. "Come on," he said. "The road is muddy. Let's walk together. It is easier when you have a friend."
