It was the middle of summer, and the sun was burning hot. Two travelers were walking along a long, dusty road. They started walking early in the morning, and they were very tired now. Their faces were red, and their clothes were wet. There were no houses anywhere, only dry yellow fields.
"I can't walk anymore," said the first traveler. "If I don't rest, I am going to fall down."
Then the second traveler pointed ahead. "Look! A tree!" Next to the road, there was a huge old plane tree. Its branches were long and wide, and it had thousands of big green leaves. Under the tree, there was a large circle of cool, dark shade.
The two men ran to the tree and lay down on the soft grass under it. "Ahh," they both said. The air was cool. A soft wind was moving the leaves above them. They drank some water and closed their eyes. It felt wonderful.
After a while, the first traveler opened his eyes. He looked up at the branches.
"What kind of tree is this?" he asked.
"It is a plane tree," said the second traveler.
"Hmm," said the first traveler. "A plane tree. What a useless tree. It has no good fruit. You can't eat anything from it. Its wood is not very good for building, either. It just stands here doing nothing. It is no use to anyone at all."
"You are right," said the second traveler, yawning. "A completely useless tree."
Suddenly, the branches above them began to move. The leaves made a loud, shaking sound. And then a deep, slow voice came from the tree.
"Useless?" said the tree. "Useless! How can you say that?"
The two men sat up quickly. Their mouths fell open.
"You were burning in the sun," said the tree. "You were tired, and you were dying of heat. Then you came to me. Now you are lying in my cool shade. You are resting under my branches. You are enjoying the wind in my leaves. And while you are enjoying all of these things, you call me useless? You ungrateful men!"
The two travelers looked at each other. Their faces turned red, and not only from the sun.
"We are very sorry," said the first traveler. "You are right. You are the most useful tree in the world today."
They rested under the tree until the afternoon was cooler. Before they left, the second traveler gave the tree some of his water. And as they walked away, they turned and waved goodbye.
