Early one summer morning, a wolf was walking out of a big field of oats. The oats were tall and golden, and they were moving softly in the wind. At the edge of the field, the wolf met a horse who was walking along the road.
The wolf put on his biggest, friendliest smile. "Good morning, my dear friend!" he said. "What a beautiful day!"
The horse stopped and looked at him carefully. Horses do not usually like wolves. "Good morning," he said.
"I have wonderful news for you," said the wolf. "Do you see this field? It is full of the most delicious oats in the whole country. Sweet, fresh, golden oats. I was in the field just now, and I did not eat a single one. I saved them all for you!"
"For me?" said the horse.
"Yes, for you!" said the wolf. He put his paw on his heart. "Because you are my friend. I love to hear the happy sound of a friend eating good food. Crunch, crunch, crunch! That sound is my favorite music. So please, go in and eat. Eat as much as you want. It is my gift to you."
The horse looked at the field of oats. Then he looked at the wolf. He thought for a moment, and then he began to laugh.
"Thank you, wolf," he said. "You are very generous. But tell me something. What do wolves eat?"
The wolf's smile became a little smaller. "Well, we eat meat, mostly," he said.
"Exactly," said the horse. "Wolves eat meat. Wolves do not eat oats. When a wolf finds food that he likes, he eats every bit of it. He does not save it for a friend, and he does not think about anybody's happy sound. You did not save those oats for me. You did not eat them because you can't eat them."
The wolf did not say anything.
"So please do not ask me to say thank you," said the horse. "You did not give me anything. You only gave away something that you did not want."
The horse walked into the field and began to eat the oats. They were very delicious. But he kept one eye on the wolf the whole time. And he made sure that he was always standing with his strong back legs toward him.
The wolf sat at the edge of the field for a while. Then he walked away, very hungry and very disappointed.
