Long ago, the birds and the beasts had a terrible war. Nobody remembered how it began. On one side were the birds, like eagles, crows, and owls. On the other side were the beasts, like lions, bears, and wolves. They fought for many months.
The bat did not know what to do. He had wings like a bird. But he also had fur and teeth like a beast. "I don't want to be on the losing side," he thought. "So I will wait and see who is winning."
One day, the birds won a big battle. The bat flew to the birds quickly. "Hello, my friends!" he said. "Look at my wings! I am a bird, just like you. I am happy to fight with you." The birds were not sure, but they let him stay.
But the next week, the beasts won a big battle. So the bat flew away from the birds, and he went to the beasts. "Hello, my friends!" he said. "Look at my fur and my teeth! I am a beast, just like you. Birds don't have teeth, do they? I am happy to fight with you." The beasts were not sure, but they let him stay.
This went on for a long time. When the birds were winning, the bat was a bird. When the beasts were winning, the bat was a beast. He never really fought for anyone. He only changed sides again and again.
At last, the war ended. The birds and the beasts made peace. They had a big meeting together in a meadow to celebrate. And there, they started to talk.
"The bat fought with us," said the eagle.
"No, he fought with us," said the lion.
"He told us he was a bird," said the owl.
"He told us he was a beast," said the bear.
Everyone turned and looked at the bat. The bat's face became hot, and he tried to hide behind a tree.
"You are not our friend," said the eagle. "You are only a friend when things are easy."
"We don't want you either," said the lion. "We can never trust you."
So both the birds and the beasts sent the bat away. He had nowhere to go. In the daytime, the birds and the beasts were all around, so he hid in dark caves. He came out to fly only at night, when everyone was asleep. And that is why, even today, the bat hides in the daytime and flies at night.
