A farmer lived in a house far up in the mountains. He had sheep, goats, two big oxen, and two clever dogs. The dogs helped him with the sheep, and the oxen helped him plow his fields. It was a good, quiet life.
One winter, a terrible snowstorm began. Snow fell day and night. Soon it was higher than the windows, and the road to the village was closed. The farmer and his family could not go out. There was no way to buy food.
After a week, the food in the kitchen was gone. "We are going to be very hungry," said the farmer to his wife. "I must kill one of the sheep." So he did, and the family ate well for some days.
But the snow did not stop. So the farmer killed another sheep, and then another. Soon all the sheep were gone. Then he started on the goats.
The two dogs were watching all of this from their warm place by the fire. They were not worried. "The sheep and goats are for food," said the brown dog. "That is normal. We are different."
The snow kept falling. The goats were all gone now too. One morning, the dogs saw the farmer go out to the barn with a big knife. When he came back, he was carrying meat. The dogs looked at each other. They knew where that meat came from. It was one of the oxen.
"The oxen!" said the black dog quietly. "He killed one of the oxen! The oxen work for him every day. They plow his fields. Without them, he can't grow any food in spring."
The brown dog's ears went down. "If he can kill the oxen," he said slowly, "who work so hard for him and make him rich, what do you think he will do to us?"
The two dogs looked at each other for a long moment. They did not need to say anything more.
That night, when the family was asleep, the dogs walked quietly to the back door. They pushed it open with their noses and went out into the snow. They found a small hole in the fence, and they ran down the mountain toward the village.
They never came back. In the village, they found a new master, a kind old baker who was always happy to share his bread.
