It was the end of a long winter, and a young fox was very hungry. He ate nothing for three days. His stomach was making loud noises, and he was walking slowly through the fields looking for food.
Suddenly, he smelled something wonderful. It was bread and meat! He followed his nose to a big old oak tree. In the side of the tree, there was a small hole. Inside the hole, he could see a basket. Some shepherds left their lunch there while they were working with their sheep.
The hole was very small, but the fox was very thin. He pushed his head in. Then he pushed his shoulders in. With a little squeeze, he got his whole body inside the hollow tree.
"What a lucky day!" he said. There was a whole loaf of bread, a big piece of meat, and some cheese too. He ate the bread. He ate the meat. He ate the cheese. He ate every last bit, until the basket was empty. Then he lay back with a big smile. His stomach was round and full.
"Now I am going home to sleep," he said. He put his head out of the hole. He pushed his shoulders out. But then his big round stomach stopped him. He pushed and pushed, but he could not get through. He was stuck!
"Help! Help!" he cried. "I can't get out! The shepherds will come back soon. What am I going to do?" He started to cry loudly.
Another fox was walking past the tree. She heard the noise and came over. "What is the matter with you?" she asked.
"I came into this tree to eat some food," said the stuck fox. "I was thin when I came in. But now I am too fat to get out!"
The second fox looked at him and started laughing. "Oh, my friend," she said. "That is easy. You don't need any help. You only need to wait."
"Wait? Wait for what?" he asked.
"Wait until you are thin again, like you were when you went in," she said. "Then you will get out easily." And she walked away, still laughing.
The poor fox sighed. He stayed in that tree all night. He got hungry again, and his stomach became small again. Early the next morning, just before the shepherds came back, he squeezed out of the hole and ran home.
